Last night, Santigold celebrated the 10-year anniversary of her debut album with a packed room of adoring fans at Hammerstein Ballroom.
The show was one of ten scheduled shows across the U.S. as part of her “10 Years Golder Tour.” Decked out in a blonde wig and a loud jacket with over-sized, ruffled sleeves, Santi played the entire 2012 self-titled album, including early fan favorites “L.E.S. Artistes,” “Say Aha,” and “I’m a lady,” as well as select songs off Master of My Make-Believe, 99 Cents, and last year’s I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions.
Following the songs off her first album, the riled up crowd was treated to a half-time of sorts with a dance break set to covers by Future, Jlin, Sophie, and Major Lazor/Gyptian.
In comparison to Santigold’s past shows in New York, specifically Hammerstein Ballroom in 2016 and Roseland Ballroom in 2013 (R.I.P.), there were not many surprises during the performance. The high-energy music, phenomenal on-stage dancers, and eccentric stage presence is what the fans crave, and it’s exactly what they got. The crowd soaked up the spirit of the room and danced.
Perhaps the most invigorating moment of the night was when Santigold invited her fans on stage during “Creator.” After what seemed like a moment of disbelief from the crowd, thirty or so people rushed through the audience and joined the star for a dance session.
The second half of the show featured “Go!,” “Chasing Shadows,” “Coo Coo Coo,” “Run the Road,” “Can’t Get Enough of Myself,” “Disparate Youth,” and “Big Mouth.”
After an exciting hour and a half performance, Santigold wrapped up the night with “Hold the Line,” “We Want Some Pussy,” and “B-O-O-T-A-Y.”
It’s been a good ten years, Santi. We’re looking forward to what’s next.
