I arrived earlier than others to Breva and immediately regretted not spending the whole day there — taking in the salty breeze, watching the diverse crowds stroll by, soaking up the gentle rhythm of the boardwalk. Brighton Beach has that effect. It’s not in a rush, and neither should you be.
Admittedly, it’s been years since I made my way out to Brighton Beach in the evening. Not that it’s too far — Brighton Beach just isn’t usually the first place that comes to mind for dinner. For many, it’s a neighborhood defined by its strong Russian roots: Cyrillic storefront signs, pillowy plates of vareniki, and grocery aisles stacked with blini flavors. When it comes to beach days, I usually split my time between Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Rockaway Beach — but I tend to leave as the sun is setting.
My summer evening in Brighton changed my mind. Surprisingly, you’ll find Breva, an American eatery with Eastern European influence, tucked right into the heart of this historic seaside stretch. This New American brasserie and cocktail bar sits proudly on the Brighton Beach boardwalk — a place where sea breeze meets seasonal cooking, and where good drinks and people watching are always on the menu.
Breva, the New American brasserie from award-winning Apicii Hospitality, has a 110-seat oceanfront patio for the summer, introducing fresh seasonal programming with highlights like Sunday Jazz Brunch and Le Plage de Brighton, a spirited Summer Friday series featuring a roaming spritz cart and live music. For dinner, guests can choose to dine outside on the boardwalk, soaking up the ocean air; in the stylish, sunlit dining room; or descend into the restaurant’s stunning hidden subterranean wine cellar.
Before dinner, I enjoyed some expertly crafted cocktails — personal favorites including the Breva Smoked Old Fashioned, Jungle Bird, and the aptly named Seaside Vesper. While some drinks arrived in charming tiki glassware and featured smoked presentations, they didn’t need to rely on flair or theatrics thanks to quality ingredients and precise technique. The beverage program honors Brighton Beach’s Eastern European roots with a 75-bottle “Book of Vodka,” where each bottle is paired with house-made fruit compote and seltzer chasers, reflecting local traditions. The cocktail list blends timeless flavors with creative execution, including the Hibiscus Margarita, the neighborhood-inspired Brooklyn cocktail. For a personalized experience, the Martini My Way offers guests the chance to customize their martini from start to finish.
Our evening unfolded with a thoughtfully curated multi-course meal. The appetizer course featured highlights like Salmon Crispy Rice, fresh and vibrant Ahi Tuna Tartare, a bright Mediterranean salad, and creamy Fava Bean Hummus — perfect bites that set the tone for what was to come and complement the wine now being poured.
Mains followed with a variety of standout dishes: a bright Mediterranean salad, hearty Black Angus Steak Frites, perfectly pan-seared salmon paired with crispy pan-seared potatoes and mushrooms, tangy cider-glazed Brussels sprouts, and a simple pasta dish. Dessert offered a sweet finish with a classic New York Cheesecake and a magical Chocolate Carmel Pie— rich, creamy, and just the right touch to end a memorable meal.
Breva’s dinner wasn’t just about the food — it was about place, pace, and presence. This is a space that honors Brighton Beach’s heritage while inviting diners into a new, elevated way to experience the neighborhood. We concluded the evening with a nightcap on the boardwalk seating, watching families, friends, and couples meander by
But dinner is not the only time to visit Breva. The weekend brunch features live summer jazz, with a brunch drink cart moving between tables offering custom pours. The brunch menu is filled with both classic dishes and creative cocktails.
So if you’re looking for a summer dining moment that feels like a secret worth discovering, skip the obvious. Head toward the edge of Brooklyn, where the boardwalk blends with the sand, the tide sounds sweet, and Breva. You can feel Breva bringing fresh energy to the history of Brighton Beach — from Food Network alum Chef Travis McGinty’s inspired menus to spritz carts, live music, and creative cocktails. I’m excited to go back and try starters like East and West Coast oysters served with smoked vodka cocktail sauce, Caviar Tots with crème fraîche, and Lobster Knuckles “Escargot Style” in a warm Pernod-butter sauce.
