Exclusive: Harry Lawtey Discusses Starring in HBO’s ‘Industry’ [Video]

by Katherine Tinsley November 13, 2020
written by Katherine Tinsley

HBO’s new finance show Industry restructures how we view finance and how it is depicted in the media. Former Investment bankers Mikey Down and Conrad Kay created the show and their finance past might be something the reason for the show’s authenticity.

The first time television creators work alongside a cast of powerful newcomers. In the words of actor Harry Lawtey: “I learned so much… the leads in the show we’re fairly inexperienced; this is kind of a life-changing project for us.” Industry is a powerful introduction to the talents of both the creators and the leading cast. The characters are written to show the complexities that come with life each character is multidimensional and as the show progresses the audience will better understand the complex realities each individual is navigating through. Industry is the product of powerful writing being brought to life by true thespians. Though the leading cast might be considered newcomers, their ability to bring life into the words of Down and Kay isn’t to be ignored.

With the writing of multidimensional characters, Robert is introduced to audiences with the quote: “It’s a marginal game about marginal gains.” Robert can easily be described as the life of the party and in many ways, the character functions as the glue that holds the graduates together. He has personal and individual relationships with each of the grads at Pierpoint & Co. Robert’s most important relationship is his friendship with Gus. The longstanding friendship began while the two were at Oxford before beginning their journey together at Pierpoint & Co. Their friendship holds a mirror to many of the complex social structures existing in and out of the work place. In many ways, they navigate the bank similarly both standing on the privilege of their prestigious education however, the nuances with privilege are explored through their relationship dynamic.

Lawtey’s humility along with the humility of the Industry cast is reassuring to see. The first episode is directed by Lena Dunham and it is clear that the collaborative effort between creatives created a powerful series. The raw talent brought together to make this series will lead to audiences falling in love with the characters and their storylines while learning more about finance and humanity.

Exclusive: Harm Franklin Discusses New Music, Canada and Scarface

by Katherine Tinsley November 12, 2020
written by Katherine Tinsley

S.K.A.M Artist Management’s newest member, Harm Franklin is on his way to being the next Hip Hop star out of Canada.

The Calgary native is on his way to leaving an imprint on the genre. He has tapped into the influences of Canada, pop culture, and film to create a unique sound and look. The music video for Stunnin‘ by Curtis Waters featuring Harm Franklin currently has over 22 million views, and fans are currently waiting in anticipation to see what is next for the rising star. His latest single Bad Guy explores the difficulties of a toxic relationship and being depicted as the Bad Guy. The Knockturnal spoke with Harm Franklin about the significance of Hip Hop, Scarface, and what fans can expect to see next.

The Knockturnal: When did you begin making music?

Harm Franklin: I started making music right around grade 12 in high school.  I had been writing stuff since like grade 5, haha but I started actually recording right as high school ended.

The Knockturnal: What does Hip Hop mean to you?

Harm Franklin: Hip hop means the world to me. It’s my life basically; music is my therapy.  For as long as I could remember I’ve wanted to be an artist so it feels great for this to be the first year I can actually live off of my passion.

The Knockturnal: How has your hometown of Calgary influenced your work?

Harm Franklin: I feel like it gave me an extra chip on my shoulder.  There’s still a lot of undercover prejudice that exists. Even when I first started, all the other white rappers were on that “real hip hop” tip and I had to go way harder to fight to even create the type of music that I wanted because people were apprehensive to the newer melodic sounds.  There’s a lot more stories and life here than what people may think, through the media that it’s all cowboys but people are making money and doing a lot of dirt here.

The Knockturnal: Your song with Curtis Waters has over 143 million streams on Spotify and the music video has 21 million views. What does it feel like having that many people listening to Stunnin’?

Harm Franklin: It’s a dream come true.  All I ever wanted was to give people my light to help them through their dark times.  It blew up when the world was really at a dark place at the beginning of the lockdown. It gave people a couple of minutes of happiness and release to make them forget about all the BS in the world.  Now that I’ve seen that people all across the world enjoy our stuff, it really put the wind in my sails that I needed to start dropping all this dope music I’ve been sitting on!

The Knockturnal: With your single Bad Guy what was the inspiration behind this song?

Harm Franklin: It actually came from a bad relationship I was in.  Any issue we had no matter what, it would always end in me being the bad guy and demonized.  Eventually, she admitted that it’s not always my fault and she had unresolved traumas from her past situation…but yeah we were in a fight and she turned something around that I was saying to her and I was just like “Man…why you always gotta make ME the bad guy?”  Then I was like Nah, you just need someone to play that role so you don’t feel bad about the things you say and the way you treat me.  Plus I’ve always loved Scarface and always thought that’s a cool concept for a hook or a song and it just fits perfectly with the beat.  The first minute is actually all freestyle, and HOUNDS  had to leave so we just banged that out and I was like wow this is special; so I took my time and really put my feelings into the rest of the song when we built it.

The Knockturnal: The music video was co-produced by Curtis Waters. You all have a long history of collaborating and creating art together from Hot Boy Anthem, Stunnin, and now Bad Guy. What has been the collaboration process for you all?

Harm Franklin: Me and him are just so in tune with creating music that we’re great at capturing an energy together.  I was great at translating his thoughts into lines a few years ago and now he’s so amazing himself; it’s incredible to see.  We really feed off each other well and know how great the other is and what we’re capable of, so it’s like Ironman and Captain America linking up or something haha.  I think the comfortability with each other just makes it so easy for us to have good chemistry, and know what each of us are going for.

The Knockturnal: You have a single dropping November 20th what was the inspiration for the song and how does it differ from Bad Guy?

Harm Franklin: This song is way slower and romantic.  In Canada, the winters are really harsh and cold, and in those times I always find myself listening to more R&B music.  I’m not a one-dimensional person and neither is my music, so this one is sweeter and sexier and less painful and cathartic than Bad Guy is. I  think people who like that smooth wavy R&B will love it like I do.

The Knockturnal: What can fans expect to see from you in the near future?

Harm Franklin: I have another single dropping in December with an accompanying video that will be produced by Curtis Waters.   HOUNDS and I are putting the finishing touches on our album we’ve been working on that I can’t wait to share with you all!!

Exclusive: Marisa Abela Discusses Breakout Role in HBO’s ‘Industry’ [Video]

by Katherine Tinsley November 2, 2020
written by Katherine Tinsley

HBO’s new series Industry highlights the realities of working in the finance industry, life in London, and the hardships that come with being a young adult. The show was created by two former investment bankers Mickey Down and Konrad Kay who are now using their finance past and their talent for writing to tell the stories of five young graduates at Pierpoint & Co competing for a full-time position at the prestigious bank.

Unlike many of the finance films and television, series viewers have witnessed in the past, the show packs well-written storylines that shed light on some of the harsh realities of working in finance and the difficulties within the workplace. Industry has no intention of glorifying finance or making the focus of the show money. Pierpoint & Co and the graduates are used for telling more complex storylines tackling race, privilege, gender, and all of their intersections.

Yasmin, played by Marisa Abela, on the surface is presented as a privileged polyglot living in her parents’ lavish Notting Hill home. However, the depth of Yasmin and her fight for respect in the workplace shows the truth and complexities behind the character. Her privilege is erased in the competition for a position at Pierpoint & Co and she often finds herself being reduced to the one disadvantage she possesses: her gender. Yasmin as well as the other three female characters Harper and Daria are often seen being minimized within the work environment. Yasmin in particular is seen in “humbling” positions grabbing lunches for her superiors and being ignored for her professional opinions while simultaneously being objectified for her appearance. She finds herself learning how to assert herself because she is often forced to be seen and not heard.

Marisa Abela’s portrayal of Yasmin will allow many women who have experienced many of the several discomforts that come with being in a male-dominated space to feel seen. The portrayal of the diverse realities that take place in the workplace and the world as a whole feels authentic and raw.

Industry airs Monday evenings on HBO. Check out our exclusive chat with Marisa above!

Exclusive: Morris Chestnut Discusses His New Role As A Producer For Spell

by Katherine Tinsley October 31, 2020
written by Katherine Tinsley

Moris Chestnut is known for his iconic roles such as Ricky in “Boyz n the Hood” and Lance in “The Best Man” and “The Best Man Holiday.”

However, the actor is now taking on a new role as a producer. Morris Chestnut is one of the producers of the film Spell and his work on the film is the beginning of the next chapter of his career. The Knockturnal spoke with him about his new position as a producer, the film Spell, and what fans can expect to see next from him.

The Knockturnal: Many people know you from your roles in Boyz n the Hood, the Best Man, and other iconic Black films. What was it like working as a producer for spells?

Morris Chestnut: It was great, it was a great opportunity for me. This was something that I wanted. I started this project when there was nothing on the page. Everything else that I’ve been involved in within my career there was already a script and the studio had already bought it. This was something that had came about because Gordon Gray a producer on the film he gave me a script I read it, it was a good script but it wasn’t something I was interested in being involved with at that time and then my manager and I had a concept we talked to Gordon about Gordon responded to it and we started meeting with writers Kurt Wimmer who ultimately ended up writing Spell had a great pitch and Kurt is an extremely colorful person with a bright and sharp mind quick. So, Kurt came in and we told him the concept, he added a few things, and then we have Spell.

The Knockturnal: How do you feel working as a producer will influence your work in front of the camera?

Morris: Seeing projects from beginning to end. It gives me a better understanding of  what people go through when they come up and when they get to the production of a project. I can say that most projects I’ve been involved with they’ve kind of already been sold. I’ve sold a couple of them but there was already something there. Now, this aspect of taking something from the beginning in shaping the character-shaping the world because sometimes it is much harder to do when a project is already done the writer’s already sold it the studio already loves it and then here us actors come in and say well we like the moon being full but we want it half. So it’s just little things like that it felt good to be able to shape a project from the beginning.

The Knockturnal: As a producer how do you feel Spell has evolved from the initial idea to the film audiences will see?

Morris: Spell its evolved. When we had the meeting with Kurt I have to say it’s pretty there are some things in the film that when we came up with the concept my manager and I and we met with Gordon and he responded we started meeting writers so we already had a basic fundamental concept of what we wanted the film to be when we met with Kurt he was adding this he was adding that adding the hoodoo over the voodoo. He added a lot of nice touches, of course, he wrote it and he turned it around fairly quickly and when he did that you know we had some notes as you do with a collaborative effort somethings are gonna make it in and then some things aren’t. The film has evolved into a good place there are some things that I wanted in or changed that part but a part of the collaborative process and I think ultimately we have a good project that people are going to be entertained by so that’s great.

The Knockturnal: Did you learn anything about Hoodoo or root healing by working on this project?
Morris: A little bit not much. It was a world that I was not that familiar with and Kurt he’s like an encyclopedia. I don’t know if you know what an encyclopedia is? Some long time ago we used to have to look things up. Kurt, he’s very knowledgeable on it and those are the types of things that I have a little bit of knowledge about but I don’t get too close or too deep.
The Knockturnal: Speaking of iconic Black films, one of the stars of this movie is Loretta Devine. What was it like being able to work with her on this project?
Morris: One of the things I wanted to do on this project that I wasn’t able to because of my schedule was that I wanted to be an onset producer with the project. Once, this project started at least four or five years ago now, and by the time we got it sold and had the green light I was already on another project so I didn’t get the chance to go out and be on set and work with the actors and just be there in a different capacity than I normally was, unfortunately.

The Knockturnal: Loretta stars in this film with Omari Hardwick who many of us know from the show power what was it like seeing Omari transition from depicting Ghost to playing Marq in this film.

Morris: It was good. I was looking forward to seeing  what he was going to do with it and how he was going to approach it. I think people will enjoy him in the role. I know a lot of people love Power and he has a huge fan base so it was good to see him make the transition.

The Knockturnal: What was one of your favorite aspects of producing this film?

Morris: Just taking it from its inception I mean you know what I feel good about is that this project is not even coming out in theaters or on streaming or anything without my manager and I talking to Gordon about our idea without my manager and I’s concept about what we wanted to do this film or this feature film doesn’t exist so that’s one of my favorite points about it.

The Knockturnal: What do you hope audiences will gain from this project?

Morris: I just hope that audiences will be entertained I know that sometimes with films or with projects there are messages that we want people to get and messages that you know agendas people have and I think you know with this particular film at this particular time in the world I just hope that it’s escapism to where we can get away for a minute from everything we have going on in the world and just be entertained. That’s what I hope.

The Knockturnal: With you mentioning escapism do you feel like entertainment or film, in general, has that power especially in 2020?

Morris: Most definitely yeah most definitely. I think that when I say without an agenda I think that sometimes people create entertainment to push an agenda. I just feel there are times when I watch sports or when I go watch a movie or tv I just want to have an escape. I’ve had a busy day here I’ve been dealing with this and dealing with that and I just want to escape I don’t want to think about everything I’ve been thinking about for the whole week so now I don’t wanna think about what I’ve been thinking about since 2020  since a lot has been happening. So I hope that this is the type of film where people can escape for two hours and just enjoy the film.

The Knockturnal: Do you see yourself wearing the producer hat in the near future?
Morris: Without a doubt, that’s what I want to do more than anything. It’s hard as an actor for being in front of the camera it’s hard for people to take you seriously behind the camera because you know actors get these vanity titles “hey okay we’ll put your name as a producer just star in the movie don’t say anything do your work and we’ll give you the producer title” but I want to make a film from beginning to end without being in front of a camera two seconds and being the onset producer that’s my goal and this brings me one step closer to it.

Exclusive: Bonzie Discusses New Music and Her Creative Process

by Katherine Tinsley October 30, 2020
written by Katherine Tinsley

Artist Bonzie is on her way to becoming a powerful voice for her generation. Her music video for the song alone has received over 400,000 views and that number is only increasing. She describes her music as a “portrait of a specific reality.” It is clear that Bonzie is on her way to leaving her mark on the music industry. The Knockturnal spoke with the rising star about her creative process, the production process behind the Alone music video and what fans can expect to see next.

The Knockturnal: What is your inspiration for your work?

Bonzie: I’m inspired by things I don’t consider inspiring, necessarily. As a writer, I guess
subconsciously, I’m trying to discover the ironic or extraordinary in everyday life. So, that said,
relationships, people, nature… all these things have inspiring facets that could be brought to life
by a song.

The Knockturnal: With your video receiving now over 400k views how does it feel to know that over 400 thousand
people have viewed your work?

Bonzie: It feels so amazing!  I’m so happy to be able to share my music and have people actually hear it.
I’m always really excited when people repost my stuff, like, “You’re actually seeing this?! It’s
not just me?”  I spend a long time with each song by myself, so it’s a crazy feeling.

The Knockturnal: What was the production process behind the song and the music video for Alone?

Bonzie: I saw Miyo [the animator]’s short film some time last year and fell in love with her style— it’s
real and raw and emotional, and she uses her hands and fingers to paint every frame. She lives in
Japan, so when we started talking on Skype back in January, we needed a translator on the call
because my Japanese was so bad. We started working on the ‘alone’ video in the spring, and I
doubled down on studying Japanese. By the time we finished in August, we were having 3-hour
Skype calls in Japanese about everything (sans translator)!  We became close friends and I feel
lucky I was able to meet her and work together, despite being on opposite sides of the planet.

The Knockturnal: What can fans anticipate next from you?

Bonzie: The two songs I just put out— alone and Lethal— will be part of a larger LP project.  I’m
shooting to release the whole thing in early 2021. I’ve been working on it for a while so I’m
excited for it to be out there!!

The Knockturnal: Which musicians influence your style of music and creativity?

Bonzie: It’s always really hard for me to say exactly who I’m influenced by. It probably depends on who
I’m listening to the most, or what kind of music naturally attracts me at the present time. Lately,
I’m loving the music that Sampha is releasing. His voice is gorgeous and distinct. I also love
Chicago rapper Saba’s music. The lyrics are thought-provoking. Teyana Taylor’s records are
gorgeous, and my producer DJ Camper produced “Come Back To Me.” I love that track. And
Jim O’Rourke released a new experimental piece that’s really beautiful. This is what I’m
listening to as of the last week or so.

The Knockturnal: How would you describe your musical style?

Bonzie: A portrait of a very specific reality as depicted by someone. A movie, hopefully.

Exclusive: Jay Pharoah Discusses the Film ‘Bad Hair’ & 90s Black Culture [Video]

by Katherine Tinsley October 19, 2020
written by Katherine Tinsley

On October 23, 2020, Hulu will release the film “Bad Hair.”

The horror film, in many ways shows a true fear and in some cases nightmare, Black women in the professional world have: needing to relax, press, or wear a sew-in to have a career. Anna’s dreams to make it in the music industry comes at a cost, her natural hair. However, after getting her sew in it is revealed that her new weave and ticket to mobility has a mind of its own.

Jay Pharoah plays Julius in the film Bad Hair. When discussing the struggles of being natural in the 90s Jay addressed the social pressures to assimilate placed on Black women at that time in order to be perceived as desirable not just in their professional lives but in their social and dating lives as well. They were often pressured to get their hair pressed, wear a lace front, or relaxer. Jay is in many ways a true ally to Black women not only by supporting them but by sharing the message that all Black is beautiful. He also is pushing to protect Black women because they are overwhelmingly the most unprotected figure in America. His desire to protect Black women isn’t new for the SNL star because it is something he has been advocating for before Megan Thee Stallion said it during her SNL performance. Jay’s allyship to Black women is not only authentic but has been a part of his life and brand since the beginning.

There is something very relatable while simultaneously haunting about the film because it is a horror story rooted in not just truth but it is our truth. In many ways, Jay’s awareness of Black culture in the 90s and ability to discuss texturism and colorism aids in his execution of his role as Julius while simultaneously providing comedic relief.
