by Britt Trachtenberg July 19, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On July 12, Season Two of The Afterparty premiered on Apple TV+.

Chris Miller created and directed the series. Phil Lord and Anthony King produced the show. Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, and Zoe Chao reprise their roles.  The comedic murder mystery has a stunning list of new cast members and an eventful storyline.

In the show, Aniq (Richardson) and Zoë (Chao) attend Grace’s (Poppy Liu) wedding. The groom, Edgar, works as a successful investor and has an interest in lizards, cryptocurrencies, and board games. The next morning, Grace discovers that Edgar has died. Detective Danner (Haddish) questions family members to solve the case.

Each relative has a different version of the story. Suspects include Edgar’s sister (Anna Konkle) and mother (Elizabeth Perkins). Danner considers the involvement of Grace’s parents, Vivian and Ken. The couple is played by Vivian Wu and Ken Jeong. The show utilizes different camera filters as well.

Grace discusses her relationship with Edgar in Jane Austen’s style. In the scenes, characters have stunning dresses. Grace’s ex-boyfriend tells his narrative as though it were a film noir. It involves less color than the aforementioned Austen fashion. Such different mediums define each character. It highlights variations between the characters’ personalities.

“Ghosted! by Roz Hernandez” Joins Exactly Right Media

by Britt Trachtenberg July 17, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On July 10, Exactly Right Media announced that “Ghosted! by Roz Hernandez” joined its lineup.

In the show, host and comedian Roz Herandez interviews celebrities, paranormal professionals, and entertainers. Together, they discuss supernatural encounters, such as ghosts and psychic activities. The participants focus on the instances’ effects too. Hernandez provides excellent commentary.

With an open mind and a humorous perspective, she dives into eerie stories. The transgender paranormal enthusiast and actor performs in various Los Angeles venues as well. CEO of Exactly Right Media Karen Kilgariff admires Hernandez’s work.

“Her wit, vulnerability, and wide-eyed exploration of the occult make her a perfect fit for the Exactly Right network.  We’re thrilled to share her unique voice and talents with the Exactly Right audience,” said Kilgariff. The Ghosted! podcast sees great success.

People and Vulture published features about the show.  Margaret Cho, Nicole Byer, Bryan Fuller, and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon, made previous appearances.

On July 17, the spooky podcast will have new weekly episodes. Upcoming guests include comedian Patton Oswalt, My Favorite Murder co-host Georgia Hardstark, actor Busy Philipps, and Scam Goddess host Laci Mosley. To learn more, read the interview transcript with Hernandez below.

The Knockturnal: Where do you typically find unusual and paranormal stories to talk about?

Roz Hernandez: I have created a super fun community of weirdos that send me all kinds of stuff to talk about! A lot of the time I get stories from their own experiences as well as topics, documented cases, and even guest suggestions. I also spend late nights Googling and reading through vintage paranormal books and magazines.

The Knockturnal: Can you explain your process for choosing which guests to interview?

Roz Hernandez: Well for the first 3 or so years it was only people that had firsthand stories of their own. That ended up being incredibly challenging to book. Any podcast is hard to book but when you add that element in, OOF I don’t know how I did it. So nowadays I always prefer guests with stories to share but most episodes are with guests that are fun people that I enjoy and I prepare the spooky content for us to ponder. My main requirements are that the guest have to have a sense of humor and be open to the idea of the unknown.

The Knockturnal: How did you begin your journey with the Exactly Right network?

Roz Hernandez: I have been a huge fan of Exactly Right since day one. When I was looking for a new home for the podcast it felt well, exactly right. I think that what the network has created with true crime and comedy goes along with what I do and it has been a dream to collaborate together. People that like scary stuff and laughing are my kind of people.

The Knockturnal: What changes has your podcast gone through since you joined the Exactly Right network?

Roz Hernandez: It feels like she has been through a makeover. She is the same podcast as before but in the few months that she disappeared, she got some work done. She is refreshed. Everything is just elevated. There are some new sound design elements, more listener stories, and new cover art!

The Knockturnal: What can listeners expect from upcoming episodes of your podcast?

Roz Hernandez: Lots of laughs, lots of weird conversations. I’ve really leaned into more topics that are beyond just ghosts like more extraterrestrials, unusual creatures, and synchronicities. I think the podcast has found its groove with the comedy and I have been truly dying laughing every episode. It’s just a fun vibe all around!

Rooftop Films Screens the 2023 Feature “No Hard Feelings”

by Britt Trachtenberg July 10, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On June 21, Rooftop Films screened No Hard Feelings (2023) at the Lower East Side’s New Design High School. The feature starred Jennifer Lawrence as Maddie. Andrew Barth Feldman played Percy. Gene Stupnitsky directed the sex comedy.

In the film, a down-on-her-luck woman named Maddie lost her childhood home. She answered an advertisement to “date” a wealthy, awkward nineteen-year-old boy named Percy. His parents posted the listing on Craiglist. They hoped to get their son out of his shell before college. Due to the boy’s anxiety, his dates with Maddie didn’t go as planned.

After the special presentation, Ronald Gladden spoke with Feldman. To learn more about the film’s production and Feldman’s character, read the interview transcript below.

Ronald: For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Ronald Gladden. I’m from the Amazon show Jury Duty by Gene Stupnitsky, and I am so excited to be here tonight. We have a hilarious and brilliant screening of No Hard Feelings, but, before we get into that, I do want to introduce our special guest tonight, the star of the film, Andrew Barth Feldman.

Andrew: Hey everybody, thanks for being here. Wow.

Ronald: Welcome.

Andrew: Welcome to you. Thank you for being here, it’s great to see you.

Ronald: You as well. The first question I have for you, Andrew, is: can you describe this film to us in three words?

Andrew: Two – dark, funny.

Ronald: That’s a great answer.

Andrew: Thank you.

Ronald: So the next question is: what made you want to initially do this film?

Andrew: Oh man, I mean the easy answer is obviously like — there was no walk here for me. It wasn’t like I was in movies and was like ‘Hey, guess I’ll do this one’ like Jennifer Lawrence is doing this excellent comedy. But the script, the first time I read it, after my first audition, it’s the funniest script I’ve ever read, not that I’m the arbiter but Jen agrees and this character was really, really, I was riding my wheel after him, I was so connected to him and I wanted to take on the myriad of challenges that came with playing him.

Ronald: Yeah— and by the way, for those of you who haven’t seen it, it is very funny. I will agree the script is great. That leads me to my next question: can you tell me about your character and do you see any similarities between himself and you?

Andrew: Yeah. 100% yes. So firstly he’s this very sort of — [to the audience] you’re going to watch the movie in a second — but he’s this very antisocial, nervous, but very kind, sweet young man, and yes I think we’re very similar. I’m a much more social person, he would never stand up here and talk to you but I think the engine of anxiety drives both of us. But also like, he’s very sheltered from the world, there’s a lot he doesn’t know how to do and I didn’t know how to ride a bike before this movie. Like, for real, I had to learn how to ride a bike for this movie, so that’s the kind of stuff I didn’t know how to do the same way a person doesn’t know about the world he’s venturing into.

Ronald: That’s a great behind-the-scenes fact right there. I didn’t know that coming into this.

Andrew: There you go. I had to go to Central Park with my friends and my friends who are the same age as me had to teach me how to ride a bike.

Ronald: That’s great. So obviously I’m a huge fan of Gene’s, having worked on Jury Duty, but truthfully I never got to meet him though, so what I’m curious [about] though, is what it’s like to work with him.

Andrew: He is an incredible director. He was throwing alternate lines at us constantly. The version of the movie you’re about to see is the funniest version but there are a hundred other versions of different jokes and things he would throw at us on the day. He was so collaborative and wanted to know about how I thought of Percy as a young person as a representative for Gen Z and yeah, he’s one of a kind and so weird, but brilliant.

Ronald: Weird, but brilliant, we love to hear it. So, comedy is obviously a new genre for you. Were you nervous going into this and how did you prepare for this?

Andrew: I think it’s been something I’ve been so hungry to do for so long – I was in the show Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway which, [turns to face the crowd] — oh, a smattering of recognition — people don’t remember how funny it is, it is a very funny show. You take away a lot of sadness and emotion. But yeah, I love shtick, like I love physical comedy, and this movie has so, so much of it, and also Gene’s script is so funny that to deliver these jokes you just kind of have to tell the truth.

Ronald: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. That totally makes sense. So my question is: what’s the funniest thing to you that happened on set?

Andrew: Ooh, there’s a shot in the movie where we’re walking with dogs on the beach. The first time we did it, I had these two big dogs, and we were running. As soon as Gene calls “action,” the dogs take off. I fly through the air from the weight of the dogs pulling me forward and land on my face in the sand and I’m so mad it’s not in the movie. It just happened because the dogs were too heavy and then Jen had to take the big dogs and I took the little dogs.

Ronald: That actually leads to my next question. Were there any moments outside of that that were just so good that didn’t make the final cut but you wish they did?

Andrew: Oh yeah, that same day we went to another thing with dogs, we’re washing the dog – that’s in the movie – but Gene, over the mic goes, ‘and now, Andrew, let the dog lick you in the mouth’ and I did, right away, and he was like, ‘I was joking, why would you do that’ and I was like ‘well you better fucking use it in the movie, man’, and he did. I put my life on the line for this movie.

Ronald: Exactly. So, Andrew, is there anything, before we start this movie, that you’d like to say to the audience?

Andrew: Happy summer solstice. I just really hope you get to look at each other and be like, is this really happening, just laugh, that’s the best thing about this movie, we get to laugh together in a theatre, which we haven’t really done in a long time, so I hope you have that experience tonight on this cool rooftop. Thanks so much for being here, everybody, I hope you enjoy the movie.

The Grammy Museum Screens the Documentary “Heart and Soul: A Love Story”

by Britt Trachtenberg July 10, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On June 8, the Grammy Museum screened the documentary Heart and Soul: A Love Story. Their presentation honored Black Music Appreciation Month. The award-winning feature told the oral histories of rhythm and blues musicians. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, these artists started rock music. Director, producer, and singer Kenny Vance guided viewers through vital artifacts.

The film showed Vance’s recordings and reflections. Also, it displayed his interviews with long-time friends, admirable musicians, and collaborators. Artists included The Chantels, The Dubs, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and Little Anthony and the Imperials. These revolutionary Black and Latine artists transformed music.

Their lyrics, harmonies, dance routines, and styles inspired children. In school hallways and subway stations, people arranged a-cappella songs. The musicians created the classic doo-woop genre as well.

The music style empowers many generations. Top brand advertisers and Hollywood filmmakers use the songs in their content. Heart and Soul discussed social and political topics too.

The film showed raw primary accounts of artists at the beginning of their careers. In the entertainment industry, they attempted to tell previously-unheard stories. They combatted issues of equity and recognition. Their content displayed their hopes and talents. The event’s presentation included special guests.

Hip-hop icon, music producer, and comedian Christopher “Kid” Reid delivered a contextual opening monologue. The speech grounded viewers in the time period’s music and social scenes. It clearly defined the film’s core messages: inclusivity and social change.

Nationally recognized brand architect, TV personality, and author Ericka Pittman emceed the event. She moderated a post-screening discussion with Vance. In the conversation, he demonstrated his vast music knowledge, made possible by his robust career.

He is an original member of the hit ‘60s group Jay and the Americans. The band opened for The Beatles and Rolling Stones’ first U.S. concerts. Outside of performing, Vance played a role in various sectors of pop culture.

He worked as Musical Director for Saturday Night Live. He organized debut guest performances by Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Prince. His efforts influenced the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Steely Dan. Vance produced and musically-supervised films too.

Credits included Animal House (1978), The Warriors (1979), Hairspray (1988), and Looking for an Echo (2000). He worked on American Hot Wax (1978), Heart of Dixie (1989), Hard Promise (1991), and Into My Heart (1998). He used over eight decades of experience to preserve American mid-century music history. Heart and Soul served as a vivid culmination of his efforts.

The Garden State Film Festival awarded his directorial debut with “Best Feature Film Documentary.”

The Great Gatsby Immersive Show Debuts at the Park Central Hotel

by Britt Trachtenberg July 10, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On July 5, director Alexander Wright presented The Great Gatsby— The Immersive Show. The play made its American and New York debut at Gatsby Mansion in the Park Central Hotel. A world of energetic rhythms, exquisite liquor, and jazzy self-indulgence awaited attendees. They interacted with lively Gatsby characters.

Visitors danced the Charleston and clinked glasses with Daisy and Tom Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, Nick Carraway, and Jay Gatsby. As the festivities went on, secrets unraveled. Attendees explored fancy rooms to understand the time period.

Nick brought guests to a den, in which he introduced himself. Then, he attempted to introduce Myrtle and Tom. Unfortunately, the pair began to kiss. Nick explained that he met Tom in college. The couple excused themselves and ran out the door. Nick tried to continue with his earnest monologue.

He discussed the couple’s affair. Tom was actually married to Nick’s cousin, Daisy. On the side, Tom had intercourse with Myrtle. The situation greatly upset Nick. As he spoke, Tom and Myrtle made excessive noises.

The couple pounded on the door and moaned. The noises became louder and more dramatic. Nick said, “Imagine living with this for four years.” Then, he laughed and asked about the couples in the room. Two attendees on a comfortable beige couch raised their hands. Nick inquired about how they met.

The two guests explained that they met in high school. Nick asked if they learned everything from first impressions. The visitors shook their heads. From the conversation, Nick said that people never truly know one another. He asked the visitors not to hold this against Myrtle and Tom. He brought the attendees into the main room.

In the casino room, Meyer Wolfsheim made fictitious bets with participants. He performed card tricks and talked about 1920s sports. He snidely commented on Myrtle and Tom’s affair. Then, a choir came in with other attendees. They hoped for introductions to Broadway directors.

The scene demonstrated Meyer’s sarcastic demeanor. He asked to see the choir’s talents. One actress in a bonnet sat on a comfortable chair. A singer in another bonnet played the piano. They played a song in which they requested jokes from the audience. Meyer did not like the song.

He refused to introduce the choir to Broadway directors. Instead, he asked them to write a love song for Jay and Daisy. The musicians reluctantly wrote a song. Meyer led the attendees back into the main room.

Jay anxiously prepared for Daisy’s arrival. He picked three visitors to assume the role of servants They put on white prop aprons. Another character declared that Jay was not dressed. From behind a partition, Jay gave the pretend servants frantic directions. He emerged with a spotlight on him.

He wore a sharp, pink suit and a gorgeous bow tie. The attendees giggled at the sight. Jay disliked the servants’ work and dismissed them. Once again, the guests became audience members. Jay elegantly decorated the room’s center.

He rolled out an expensive rug. He placed a wooden table on top. Then, he draped a white lace tablecloth. Jay brought out elegant teacups and flowers. Stage managers brought out large bouquets of flowers on pillars. Jay clapped his hands and the pillars glowed with bright lights. Then, he anxiously awaited Daisy’s arrival.

He asked an attendee if Daisy would arrive. The guest said, “I hope so.” Jay chuckled and said, “I hope so too.” Next, he marched to the grand staircase’s foot. He asked a stylish visitor how to pose. She suggested one hand in his pocket and he agreed. When she entered the room, Daisy stared at Jay in awe.

The pair drank cups of tea and laughed. They happily danced near the floral pillars. Soon, they playfully chased each other around the room. The occasion set up a new conflict: Daisy and Jay’s romance. Soon after, a fifteen-minute intermission ensued.

From the bar, attendees bought drinks and snacks. Bartners served Pilsner, IPA, and Lagers. They offered Prosecco, Chardonnay, Rosė, Cabernet, Merlot, and two types of Champagne. They created cocktails as well.

The Bees Knees contained Dorthy Parker gin, honey, and a lemon slice. The Daisy had 1800 Tequila, Curacao, Agave, ginger, and a lemon slice. The Expresso Martini consisted of ALB Vodka, cold brew, and espresso liqueur. The Old “Sport” Fashioned had Woodford Reserve Bourbon and bitters. Other cocktails impressed attendees too.

The Manhattan had WhistlePig Piggyback Rye, Vermouth Di Torino Rosso, and bitters. The Sands Point Sidecar contained Curacao, Pierre Ferrand Cognac, bitters, and a lemon slice. The J.G. Negroni consisted of Rockey’s Botanical Liqueur, Campante Mezcal, and Luxardo Bitters. The Carraway Daquiri had Maraschino Liqueur, Angostura Rum, lime, and grapefruit. Wolfsheim’s Viper contained Dorothy Parker gin, Belvedere Vodka, and Vermouth Binaco Bitter. Bartenders offered tasty non-alcoholic drinks.

Giggle Juices consisted of the Sour Cherry Cooler as well as the Citrus and Ginger Fizz. Soft drinks included Fever Tree Ginger Beer, Fever Tre Tonic, Fever Tree Ginger Ale, Coca-Cola, and Sprite. The drinks paired well with the delectable snacks.

Attendees chose from roasted mixed nuts, caramel popcorn, cherry licorice, and salt-water taffy. Other options included chocolate chip and double fudge cookies as well as milk and dark chocolate bars. During the intermission, visitors discussed their opinions of the show.

A woman had seen the show once before. She said, “I stood on a different side of the room this time. It feels like I’m seeing a totally different show.” This comment demonstrated the show’s unique versatility. In Act Two, the play exhibited more tension.

Tom and Daisy’s disloyal acts increased. Daisy fell more in love with Jay. He gave her a tour of his house. They passionately kissed on his bed. Daisy took off her dress, revealing a blue nightgown. Then, the couple noticed the attendees and giggled

Jay gave Daisy a gorgeous dress. She invited three women into her changing room. She slipped on the pretty dress and asked a woman to zip her. Next, Daisy wondered how to explain her outfit change to Jay. The three attendees gave possible excuses. Then, they returned to the main room.

Despite the affair, Tom acted possessive of Daisy. He did not believe that Myrtle gave her the dress. Some of the characters wanted to drive into town. Nick brought some visitors into another fancy room.

He explained why the characters should not go to town. The visitors agreed with Nick’s perspective. Other characters entered the room and protested the decision. Despite their drunken states, the characters went out using the main room’s props. As in Fitzgerald’s novel, a tragedy occurred.

Daisy accidentally hit Myrtle with her car. Dismal lights flickered and thunder crashed. Myrtle lay on a long table at the room’s center. The other characters tried to agree on alibis. Jay wanted to say he drove. Then, the party’s tension escalated further.

Tom asked Daisy to go home with him. Jay said that she actually loved him. Daisy found herself in the middle of this feud. She said she loved them both and ran off. Jay yelled “Wait!” and dashed after her. The immersive show had an excellent cast.

Actresses included Jillian Anne Abaya, Stephanie Rocío, Claire Saunders, Mya Rosado-Tran, Kiki Burns, Anika Braganza, and Stephanie Cha. Actors included Joél Acosta, Rob Brinkmann, Shahzeb Hussain, Keivon Akbari, Nicholas Caycedo, Charlie Marcus, and Jeremiah Ginn. The play had a fantastic production team and crew.

Holly Beasley-Garrigan, Hannah Davies, Amie Burns Walker, Phil Grainger, Thomas Maller, Michael Lambourne, and Oliver Tilney created the immersive show.

Tara Ocon served as the Resident Director and Oliver Tilney provided additional direction. Thomas Schall directed the fight sequences.

Casey Jay Andrews designed the set and Faye Armon-Troncoso created the props. Jeff Croiter served as the Lighting Designer. Kristin Dwyer shined in her role as stage manager.

Giles T. Horne and Rachael Wilkin worked as Assistant Stage Managers.

Peter Fitzgerald worked as a sound designer, while Vanessa Leuk designed the costumes. Claire McKenzie directed the music. Tendai and Glen composed vibrant and classy music. Shoko Kambara held the title of US Art Director.

Emily Venezia and Rachel Wilkin served as Assistant Stage Managers. S. Dylan Zwickel excelled in his roles as Cultural Advisor and Script Consultant.

Bayley Turner worked as Intimacy, Inclusion, and Consent coordinator. This helped with the show’s love scenes and representation of various cultures. The immersive play had terrific event partners.

Partners included Nowaday Vintage Car Tours NYC, New York Vintage, Screaming Mimis, Le Grand Strip, Glosslab, Champion Parking, and Gatsby’s Landing.

Arlo’s Living Room Gallery Presented Brock DeBoer’s “Far From Home” Collection

by Britt Trachtenberg July 10, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On July 6, Arlo NoMad presented the opening reception for Arlo’s Living Room Gallery. Jasmine Arakel created the gallery and curated its pieces. The cozy room displayed Brock DeBoer’s Far From Home installation, on loan from Guy Hepner Gallery. The realistic sneakers sculptures impressed attendees.

Ceramic shoes sat inside glass display cases. Each featured an inventive design and Nike’s logo. One displayed an intricate floral pattern with little white space. Through crosshatching, the flowers and petals had dimensions and shadows. The white swish matched the sculpture’s color palette. Another shoe had a different pattern.

This piece had scribbles across the side and Nike’s logo. It displayed plenty of white space. It showed a minimalist approach. A third sculpture had a similar look. Flowers and leaves danced across a small part of the side. DeBoer did not paint on half the shoe, including Nick’s logo. A fourth sculpture had a unique color palette.

The item had a light purple ombre and a shiny gold swish. DeBoer wrote “Air” on the work’s midsole with accuracy. A fifth sculpture had a similar approach.

This shoe also featured a golden swish. In addition, it had a golden tongue. It showed red shadows at each seam. It made the stitching more prominent. DeBoer sculpted realist basketballs as well.

One basketball had shades of blue and purple. Slight mixing occurred between the colors. Some stains looked like trees and flowers. Another piece had a distinct color scheme.

The light green sculpture displayed dark green flowers. They had curly stems and leaves. The white lines sliced the design into fragments. The ceramic material shined in the fluorescent lighting. A third ball featured an eccentric shape.

The round sides contrasted with the flat top. It represented the yellow piece’s deflated nature. The off-white porcelain lines gave the object more dimension. Arakel and Guy Hepner Gallery representatives discussed the cultural importance of the sculptures.

Guy Hepner Gallery discovered DeBoer through Instagram. Over the past ten years, the gallery discovered many emerging artists in this manner. “The artists have become popular from running their own pages,” the representative explained. She talked about Instagram curators, who have produced shows.

The team members displayed upcoming artists’ pieces. They came across DeBoer’s brilliant sculptures. Curators communicated with him on the social media app. The representative discussed his artistic influences.

“Interestingly, DeBoer was a studio manager for Jonas Wood, who was a great artist in the contemporary space,” the representative said. At first, Wood sculpted vases for his wife. Then, he created famous paintings, which spanned various genres. Soon after, Arakel asked how the gallery selects new artists.

Guy Hepner has an emerging artist program. The project prioritized younger and early-career artists. “All that comes down to what’s on Instagram,” said the representative. She added, “We are always on the search for new and upcoming talent.” Arakel pondered the gallery’s criteria for emerging artists.

The representative stressed the importance of unique styles and storylines. She needed an “overall structure and context around why you’re making what you’re making.” She said that collectors needed to find the work relevant.

“It’s about putting the dots together through that story and how someone could latch onto that,” the representative emphasized. She gave advice to artists who wanted representation as well.

The representative underscored the importance of networks. She advised artists to learn about the art world’s structure. She mentioned that creatives should find the ‘right’ galleries for their work. “Talk to people; introduce yourself to people. In the end, it’s such a fun business,” she explained. Arakel agreed with these sentiments.

She said, “Some artists might be a little apprehensive about speaking about their work. It’s easier said than done.” Then, the pair discussed three upcoming artists of note.

Through car windows, Gregory Thiekler took photographs of rain. He recaptured the ethereal scenes with oil paints and linen. The high-end pieces depict the storm’s different stages. “Gregory’s work is highly skilled. You need to look at an artist who has that technique and precision,” said the representative. Taher Jaoui worked in a different artistic genre.

His paintings involved abstract images. Often, he smeared oil paints onto canvases. His works incorporated many shapes and patterns. He received inspiration from Andy Warhol and Keith Herring. The representative mentioned Jaoui’s novelty in the art world.

The representative clarified, “We’ve had a lot of discussions over the past week about collectors.” She noted a recent trend in the industry as well.

She suggested that many collectors like large-scale abstract pieces. Certainly, Jaoui created similar items with depth and meaning. “He’s someone to keep an eye on,” exclaimed the representative. Japanese artist Yokoteen’s work had an overarching, simple story.

Over his whole career, he produced a kitschy, female cat character. His series, Friends in Paradise, depicted animals who surf in Hawaii. “We had three exhibitions with Yokoteen and they sell out every time,” said the representative. She encouraged artists with unique ideas.

She added, “There are markets out there for everything. Don’t be afraid to push what you’ve got and find out where that fits in.” Next, Arakel asked about good investments versus trends.

The representative said that no one can predict the market. She advised against trendy pieces. Instead, she discussed that collectors should buy what they love. Also, she mentioned how to assess a mid-career artist’s trajectory.

Collectors could accomplish this through statistical analysis. They could access the results of exhibitions and auctions. The representative reemphasized that patrons should buy what they love. At the reception, Lamalo served cocktails to attendees.

Girls Just Want To Have Fun contained vodka, cucumber, mint, aloe, and a slice of lime. All Night Long consisted of tequila, celery, and poblano. Time After Time included Grey Goose, elderflower, pear, honey, and a lemon slice. Hot Stuff featured patron silver, Aleppo pepper cordial, mango, and lime slices. Stairway to Heaven contained cynar, angel’s envy rye, white grape, orange, and basil leaves. Lamalo offered wine by the glass and bottle as well.

White wines included Massaya Sauvignon Blanc and Gerard Bertrand Chardonnay. Sparkling liquors incorporated Mionetto Prosecco, Veuve Cliquot Brute, and Hampton Water Rosė. Red wines encompassed Thalvin-Graillot Syrah and Jean-Claude Lapalu Gamay. Lamalo provided beers.

The bartenders gave out Estrella Galicia Lager, Hoboken Cityside IPA, Hoboken Day Beer Lager, Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner, and Hard Seltzer. They distributed snacks too.

Guacamole contained fresh avocado, cilantro, and tomato. Skordalia consisted of potatoes, almonds, chives, and garlic. Tahini incorporated za’atar, sesame, and olive oil. Labneh included housemade yogurt, Persian lime powder, and mint. Also, Lamalo gave out fresh pickles.

Two lucky brand fans received a unique birthday party on a luxury, Chips Ahoy-branded yacht. The two winners and their guests relaxed in cookie-shaped pool floaties. They enjoyed expresso martini mocktails and indulged in Chips Ahoy ice cream sandwiches. A live DJ entertained attendees with lively beats. The company gave prizes to other winners as well.

Three-hundred other winners received limited-edition “Chips Ahoy! Happiest Party” kits. It contained the necessary supplies for a terrific party. Items included a disposable camera, branded Bluetooth speaker, and Chips Ahoy! cookies. The bag contained brand-inspired merchandise too.

Streetwear designer Vandy The Pink created the clothes. With the garments, fans celebrated their birthdays in style. The company stocked special items on the NTWRK app.

Exclusively on the top-rated platform, fans purchased their own Happiest Birthday Kits. On April 7, the inventory stayed on the app for twenty-four hours.

To learn more about Chips Ahoy!, read the interview transcript with TV personality Captain Sandy Yawn below.

The Knockturnal: Hello!

Captain Sandy Yawn: Hello, I’m eating Chips Ahoy cookies so life is really good.

The Knockturnal: That’s great. Can you tell me about your career?

Captain Sandy Yawn: Well, I fell into boating by watching boats. A guy offered me a full-time job. Next thing you know, he’s sending me to sea school and teaching me how to drive a boat. I just happened to fall into this maritime industry. So, it’s been an awesome career. It’s escalated to the point where I’m on a TV show.

I didn’t seek the TV show. I love the maritime industry. It’s a great industry to work in.

The Knockturnal: Okay. So, what is the TV show about?

Captain Sandy Yawn: I’m on a show called Below Deck Mediterranean. It chronicles the lives of yacht crews who live and work on board a superyacht during the charter season. They highlight the ups and downs, including the great and not-so-great weather. It’s a travel show with a lot of great components.

The Knockturnal: Do you have any favorite places that you’ve traveled to?

Captain Sandy Yawn: You know, the boat is the destination, to be honest. The boat is the destination. When you anchor off of places like the South of France or the Amalfi Coast, it’s all spectacular because it’s all about the view. Even if you’re sitting in New Jersey looking at Manhattan, it’s like ‘Holy…wow! It’s incredible!’ Wherever you are– the Hamptons, New England, it’s all beautiful. Remember that you’re dropping an anchor and you’re looking ashore. The view is incredible.

The Knockturnal: Okay! Can you talk about your involvement with Chips Ahoy?

Captain Sandy Yawn: Chips Ahoy? I grew up with Chips Ahoy! They were a staple item in my house. I love the cookie. I used to count how many chocolate chips were in my cookie compared to my siblings. We would have a competition: ‘Whose cookie wouldn’t break apart before you could put it in your mouth?’

It’s a visceral experience, as much as it is flavor and taste. It is a culture, a Chips Ahoy culture! I love Chips Ahoy.

The Knockturnal: That’s great!

Captain Sandy Yawn: And I’m not saying that because I’m here today. I’m saying that because I really mean it. I love their cookies. Anyone in my family will tell you that I am a cookie person.

The Knockturnal: How does boating connect with Chips Ahoy?

Captain Sandy Yawn: You have to have your favorite snacks when you go away. I remember when I went to the Mediterranean for the first time, I was looking for cookies and cereal. Those are two things I love. When I walked into the super-mall grocery store, all they had was yogurt. I went to the cookie aisle and saw cookies I never saw in my life. I was like ‘Where is the Chips Ahoy?” I just wanted something that was familiar.

The cereal was very lacking. The one thing that Europeans do is eat very well. So, I went with the yogurt.

The Knockturnal: Okay, that makes sense. Can you talk about what you specifically do in your role with Chips Ahoy?

Captain Sandy Yawn: My specific function with Chips Ahoy is to eat the cookie. I make sure that the crispness doesn’t go away when I dunk it in milk. So, I don’t really have a role other than to enjoy something that is so great, which they made sixty years ago and two years before I was born.

I feel like the cookie was perfected by the time I was born. By the time I grew up, I had this staple item in my house.

The Knockturnal: That’s so interesting. What future plans do you have with Chips Ahoy?

Captain Sandy Yawn: Chips Ahoy is a big part of my life. So, future plans with Chips Ahoy? Hmm…maybe they come below deck with me!

They’re already there, to be honest. Like, they’re on the boat. So, every time I go away, even below deck, we have Chips Ahoy. It’s all part of it.

The Knockturnal: Okay, great. Do you have any future boat trips planned?

Captain Sandy Yawn: Future boat trips? Well, tonight, I’m going on a boat with Chips Ahoy. In two weeks, I’ll be going on another boat to Clearwater, Florida. I’m a boater, so boats are just a part of my life. I’m on a boat every chance I can get.

The Knockturnal: Okay. It was great to talk to you today.

Captain Sandy Yawn: You too; thank you!

Palermo Argentinian Bistro Hosts Private Tasting

by Britt Trachtenberg July 5, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On May 17, Palermo Argentinian Bistro opened its doors. The restaurant serves classic Argentinian dishes in Restaurant Row. Owner Orhan Cakir and Executive Chef Carlos Barroz selected the venue and created the concept.

The restaurant sits on the first two floors of a three-story brownstone. In 1894, New York City constructed this historic West Side building. With this unique space, Barroz and Cakir bring Argentinian barbecue and specialty-cut steak to New York City. Barroz demonstrates expertise with the dishes.

He grew up in Argentina among restauranteurs. His mothers, sisters, and uncles taught him how to cook. He learned about butchery from his grandfather. In 2001, Barroz immigrated to New York City. Through Palermo, he expresses love for his home country’s cuisine. As a child, he ate dishes similar to that on the menu.

Mollejas consist of a lightly-battered sweetbread. Interestingly, the appetizer comes from a calf’s pancreas and thymus gland. It has a crispy exterior and a rich, tender taste. Waiter Francho Cabello serves it with salsa criolla and butternut squash.  The salsa enhances the dish’s flavor, while the squash sauce tastes sweet. After, a second appetizer arrive.

The Vitel Tone has tuna caper and veal eye round. Barroz decorates the dish with caper berries, anchovies sauce, parmesan cheese, and white truffle oil. The tuna and veal tastes tender, while the creamy sauces add savory flavors. Next, the server brings out the main courses.

The New York Strip Milanese comes with zafron aioli, a zesty lemon, and a green salad. Barroz tops the crispy meat with mustard, which creates a contrast. The green salad containes juicy tomatoes, crunchy lettuce, and shaved carrots. The second entreė has terrific flavors as well.

The twelve-ounce New York Strip Sirloin arrives on a wooden plate. Barroz cooks the meat until medium and added a delicious barbecue marination. Then, he cuta the steak into thick pieces. He places two grilled peppers and three nuts on top. Chimichurri sauce and salsa criolla accompanies the dish in small ceramic bowls. Both foods come with mashed potatoes.

It arrives in two ceramic bowls with small handles on either side. Barroz seasons the sidedishes with chopped green onions. The potatoes taste creamy and buttery. They have an impeccably smooth texture. Using metal serving spoons, guests share the food. Beverage Director Daniel Villanueva’s cocktail program impresses customers too.

His drinks put Argentinian twist on the classics. The Pineapple Moscow Mule delights customers.

The Pineapple Moscow Mule contains van gogh, pineapple puree, ginger beet, chile Morita syrup, and fresh lime juice. Upon request, the bartender includes Mezcal. The drink arrives in a unique brass cup with fresh basil and a straw. It has a slightly bitter taste and fizzy, carbonated bubbles. The Tinto De Verano has different flavors.

The drink has red wine, pisco, and lime juice. The bartender garnishes it with Sprite and mint leaves. Cabello brings the well-balanced cocktail in a large wine glass. The plum-colored drink has a smooth texture. The Paper Plane contains a unique flavor.

It features Aperol, Nonino Amaro, Rabbit Hole Rye, and fresh lime. It has a perfect balance of sweet and sour flavors. Cakir curates the restaurant’s wine program.

The list contains thirty red, twenty white, and eight sparkling wines. The staff serves the customer with the bottle. Cakir composes a separate reserve list of bottles from his collection. He plans to update both lists based on Varietal’s availabilities and sales. Palermo has two delectable dessert options.

The churros comes with dulce de leche and hazelnut sauces. Barroz sprinkles powdered sugar on top of the fried dough. He divides the Argentinian staple into four pieces. Customers share the sweet finger with their friends. The Crepas have a similar, pleasant flavor.

Barroz fills the thin pancakes with caramelized apples. He tops the dessert with vanilla ice cream. Guests share this handheld masterpiece in a beautifully-decorated restaurant.

Cakir’s brother, Osman, designs the interior. The brownstones make him think of traditional Argentinian family-owned restaurants. The rectangular narrow dining room has royal blue and white walls. The tablecloths match the color scheme and represent Argentina’s flag. The first floor’s bartops and shelves have a fascinating backstory.

Osman found the wood in a friend’s warehouse in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The materials came from salvaged butcher blocks.

The first floor of the restaurant has vintage country-style chandeliers. The walls feature exposed bricks and two antique Champagne bottle holders from a French wine cellar.

The first floor has a cozy window seat as well. It has three large blue and white pillows. Through the glass, attendees can see 46th Street. The area becomes an excellent place for photo ops. The second-floor dining room has a similar aesthetic.

It contains a cocktail bar with six seats. Restored green industrial lights hang above the long table. Palermo creates an intimate dining experience. Cabello speaks about Cakir and Barroz’s visions for the restaurant.

He says, “This is the first Argentinian restaurant in the area, so many people find the food interesting.”

Global e-tailer Boohoo partnered with Barbie and released a limited edition capsule collection. On June 28, industry tastemakers and VIPs celebrated in Ardor, West Hollywood’s Edition Hotel’s restaurant. Notable attendees modeled high-end pieces.

BET’s 2023 Award-Winning Best New Artist Coco Jones wore the Barbie Badge Rib Bandeau Mini-dress. The garment featured baby pink double-knit fabric, a sleeveless neckline, and a short pencil skirt. She combined it with hot-pink platform sandals.

Loren Gray wore a pastel pink sleeveless mini-dress and matching purse. Her heeled sandals elevated the look. Her long hair featured a small braid.

Ming Lee Simmons posed in the Barbie Diamante Rib Racer Neck Vest. She paired the white crop top with blue jeans. The name “Barbie” sparkled on the shirt. She wore black-and-white sneakers with fuschia laces and a matching pink purse.

Siobhan Bell smiled behind a DJ booth. She wore a Barbie Velour Cropped Zip Through Jacket. It consisted of a cropped black Barbie sweatshirt with pink accents. Her pink headphones matched the fuschia stripes. She sported black sweatpants as well.

Chelsea Lazkani wore a pink Barbie leotard. The name “Barbie” was written in white script. It paired well with her soft blue jacket. Her black tights matched her long-heeled boots and a clutch purse.

Bre Tiesi sported a cropped pink T-shirt with short sleeves. It went perfectly with her high-end cargo blue jeans. Her hot pink pumps matched her rectangular purse.

Chanel West Coast wore a hot-pink spaghetti strap dress with a mini-skirt. It matched her heeled, strap sandals. She wore silver rings and bracelets. It paired well with her gorgeous necklace.

Other attendees included Cindy Prado, Margie Plus, Devyn Winkler, Ashlee Keating, and Alex Hall.

The models demonstrated the clothing line’s unique style.

The collection combined Boohoo’s inclusive street style and Barbie’s mission to empower people. It consisted of thirty-nine styles, with ready-to-wear sizes spanning 0-24. The line had a Barbiecore color scheme.

The color palette consisted of pink, white, and gray shades. Many items featured the name “Barbie” in the classic script and the iconic ponytail logo.

Customers can wear the dress for a night out with black heels. They can dress down the look with chunky sneakers. A T-shirt dress had wide sleeves and a graphic. It displayed a collage of Barbie in various photos. The line featured a ready-to-wear set as well.

The Barbie All Over Rugby Shirt matched the Barbie All Over Print Micro-skirt. Both had faded pink-and-white stripes. The word “Barbie” appeared in the familiar white script. The top had a V-neck collar and long sleeves. The mini skirt had a hemline at the upper thigh. It elongated the model’s legs and enhanced her figure.
