The first trailer for the upcoming Assassin Creed film, starring Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch, shows the protagonist traveling back in time.
The trailer of the movie theater version of the popular Ubisoft video game series Assassin’s Creed, Fassbender travels back into the Spanish Inquisition. It also shows that Fassbender’s character is executed and pronounced dead but somehow finds himself in a strange facility after being taken away by Cotillard’s Sophia Rikkin, who works for the suspicious Abstergo Industries.
The Assassin’s Creed film will draw up familiar experiences for audience members familiar with the franchise as the film will borrow a timeline the game series first visited in 2009’s Assassin’s Creed II as well as use the concept of traveling back in time. Another familiar sight will be the Animus, a virtual reality device which is premised on the idea that humans have a “genetic memory” that amounts to fully-realized incredibly specific re-creations of everything all of your ancestors ever did, which you can replay in your brain.
The rest of the cast includes Oscar-winning Marion Cotillard,The Wire‘s Michael K Williams and newcomer Ariane Labed are also on the cast list, with established character actors Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson also joining the project. The film will be directed by Justin Kurzel, as well Michael Fassbender.
The film will be released in theaters everywhere on December 21, 2016.
