The comedienne opens up about her upcoming special, her contributions to comedy, and what fans should anticipate from her new special.

Sasheer Zamata has an extensive role in comedy. As seen on ABC’s Home Economics, Hulu’s Woke, Comedy Central’s Robbie, and Saturday Night Live, Zamata has an enjoyable range for true comedy lovers.

Now, she’s celebrating the release of her newest stand-up, The First Woman. Produced on her own for the first time, the comedienne shares what this experience was like for her. “It was such a wonderful journey to have ownership of my work and have an idea of what I want to put out there”. She says to me in excitement. “I’m just excited for people to see new stuff from me”. Several themes are touched throughout the special [to name a few] such as sex, body positivity, and being Black in America.

“I rarely write my material to talk about something”, Zamata says when discussing utilizing comedy to approach topics like being Black in America. “I write from a very personable place, which does include being Black, being [a Black woman], being a [Black woman in America].  She adds, “It is conveyed in the material, but it’s because I’m talking about myself.”

Since her last special Pizza Mind, [released in 2017] Zamata has grown since then. “I feel like I took the time during the pandemic to reflect and go inward [and you can] tell in this special. Some of the themes are similar but it goes way deeper.”
