A Love Letter to Chicago Through ‘The Chi’

Ahead of the final season of ‘The Chi,’  creator Lena Waithe  and the cast reflected on  character development, responsibility, and the emotional storytelling shaping the season.

Through conversations on accountability, family, and growth, the cast reflected on the show’s balance of struggle, hope, and connection to its evolving storylines and character arcs. Jacob Latimore shared Emmett’s journey of breaking generational cycles through communication and growth. Birgundi Baker spoke on Kiesha choosing love through hardship, while Hannaha Hall highlighted Tiffany’s resilience after grief and responsibility.

Shamon Brown Jr. reflected on Papa confronting emotional vulnerability and brokenness. Michael V. Epps discussed Jake’s evolving confidence and grounded performance shaped by lived experience.

Luke James and Jason Weaver emphasized the authenticity of their brotherhood onscreen and off, noting how their real-life friendship strengthens the emotional truth of their characters and allows them to explore layered storytelling rooted in trust, collaboration, and lived experience.

Creator Lena Waithe shared that the writers’ room is shaped by real conversations around conflict resolution and recovery, hoping audiences feel connected, grounded, and never alone, while honoring how Black characters once shaped her storytelling voice rooted in emotional truth.
