Here’s a list honoring some of the most iconic black movies released in 1992.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the film Juice, We’re taking a look back to some of the other amazing films released that year. Many films at the time had strong portrayals of African-American men. Most of the men in these films held lead roles and played the protagonists in stories relevant to Black Popular Culture in the 1990s. Here are 5 films released in 1992 that had African American men as leads.
- Tupac Shakur in Juice: Juice was Shakur’s big screen debut. The film was a big influence on the youth and is still relevant to the culture today. Director Ernest Dickerson noted that the film was crafted to shine a light on the gun violence issue.
- Kid ‘n Play in Class Act: Reid and Martin, most famously known as Kid ‘n Play, played a nerdy student and a bad boy who swap records and live out new personas. However, they quickly realize their new lives aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. In an interview with The Breakfast Club, they said the characters in the film are similar to their personalities in real life.
- Eddie Murphy in Boomerang: Murphy played the role of a womanizer who begins to feel the wrath of some bad karma. He shared the screen with big names like Chris Rock, Halle Berry and Robin Givens.
- Damon Wayans in Mo’ Money: Wayans starred as a con-artist aiming to leave his old ways and get on the right track. The film evoked laughter out of many audience and brought in triple the production cost at the box office.
- Denzel Washington in Malcolm X : Written by Spike Lee, The biographical portrayal of Malcom X was released November 18, 1992. Denzel was praised for his astonishing work and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
