As David Cameron finalized his resignation as Britain’s Prime Minister, Theresa May officially accepted the post.
Cameron arrived at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday afternoon to formally present his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II. He delivered his final address outside Downing Street.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to service this prime minister for the last six years…As I leave for the last time my only wish is continued success for this very great country that I love so very much.”
Cameron announced he would be leaving his position as Prime Minister after a referendum in which Britain voted to leave the European Union. In his final words, he wished May good luck with the aftermath of Brexit.
Theresa May, who was elected as the new leader of the Conservative party this week, will be taking his place as the 76th Prime Minister of Britain. After speaking with the Queen, who invited her to form a government, May delivered her first remarks as Prime Minister, saying “The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of a privileged few, but by yours.”
May, the second woman to hold the post of Britain’s Prime Minister, is expected to release the names of her Cabinet members later today.
