For the first time in WNBA history three players from the same University were selected the top three picks in the draft.

Congratulations to Breanna Stewart, forward from the University of Connecticut for being selected numeral Uno in the 2016 WNBA Draft. I like to call her “Ms. Accolades”, she’s a 4x national champion, 4x Final Four Most Outstanding Player of the year,  3x AP player of the year, and the 5th UConn player to be selected overall number 1 in draft history.  She is 6’6 with a 7-foot wingspan and will not have difficultly adjusting to the professional three-point line. Seattle Storm will be receiving a superior player.

Shortly after Stewart was selected she told the media “I want to help the WNBA last another 20 years.” For those of you that didn’t know, this was a historical night because the WNBA is 20 years old. The next pick was Moriah Jefferson, UConn’s starting point guard.  A Quick scoring guard who led her Huskies to a national championship this year. The San Antonio Sparks will be receiving a true point guard that will impact the game immediately.

The third pick in WNBA draft was UConn’s Morgan Tuck. Tuck will not be taking her talents too far from campus because she will be suited up for the Connecticut Suns this upcoming season.

Although three UConn players were selected first. Players such as Rachel Banham from the University of Minnesota will impact the league as well. Banham scored over 3,000 career points and leads the big ten conference in scoring.  This season she had a magnificent 60-point game. Be on the lookout for her in Connecticut playing for the Suns next season because she can fill it up.

Aerial Powers of Michigan State is taking her talents to the Dallas wings. She holds the Spartans school record in points per game. Averaging just over 20 PPG for the past two seasons. This is a deep and talented draft class. Courtney Williams, Talia Walton, Courtney Walker, Tiffany Mitchell, Jonquel Jones, Imani Boyette, and Kahleah Copper will also have exceptional careers. The nervous and anxious faces I saw backstage became a sigh of relief when these young lady’s names’ were called. Now it’s time to get to work. #RookieSeason.
