Restaurant Review: China Fun

China Fun is a must go restaurant

When you look at the latest midtown Chinese restaurant China Fun from the outside, it looks rather typical and ordinary.  A nice layout of white cloth tables and fairly bright lights is the status quo for restaurants.  One of the things that seem to stand out is the nice waterfall fountain that they have in the front.  However, China Fun is anything but ordinary when it comes to their food.  If you’re looking for great and authentic Chinese cuisine then China Fun is the place to be.

Upon first walking in, we were greeted by friendly smiles.  The restaurant wasn’t too busy for this particular Friday night so the staff was very attentive and making sure we were comfortable.  The music wasn’t too loud which is perfect if you’re trying to have a good time out with friends or even a date.  The menu itself is a bit large, but in the best way possible.  If anything you just won’t know what to order because everything sounds so yummy.  But thanks to our waiter who told us her favorite dishes we were able to narrow down what we wanted to try.

For drinks, the three we thought were absolutely delicious was the apple cinnamon swirl, the saketome, and the caiprifruta.  The apple cinnamon swirl tastes exactly how it sounds.  Made with apple jack brandy, apple juice, cinnamon, and garnished with plumed raisins, this drink tasted exactly like an apple pie.  It wasn’t overly sweet and what was even better is that you would really taste the cinnamon at the end which was much appreciated.  And this drink goes down smooth.  The apple cinnamon swirl is a great drink to start off the night with or finish the night with in our opinion.  Another drink we tried was the caiprifruta which is made with leblon, crushed pineapples, mango, strawberries, mint, and lime.  This drink has a lot of fruit in it and that fruity flavor comes straight through.  This drink is a little stronger than the apple cinnamon swirl but it packs a lot of flavor with the different kinds of fruit added.  Lastly, the saketome is made with grey goose, sake, lime juice, shaken straight up, and is garnished with pickled ginger.  This drink is very subtle with its flavors having a very acidic tone with the lime juice and the pickled ginger.  If you’re not a big sweet drink fan then this cocktail is something you should try out.

For appetizers we had the red bean bun (sweet) and the shrimp dumplings.  The shrimp dumplings were pretty good.  It’s basically just shrimp in a dumpling casing and it really brings the shrimp taste to it.  Paired with soy sauce makes it taste even better with the saltiness of the soy.  The shrimp was cooked perfectly too which made it all the better.  The red bean bun was very interesting.  It’s basically plump dough surrounding a very sweet red bean paste. You pretty much have to rip the bun apart to get to the good center. But upon first taste you get that moist dough paired with the sweet and bright bean paste which was a great combo.  This bun had a lot of good flavor to it.  The red bean bun is a great way to start off the meal and we definitely recommend it.

For our main course we had the Peking duck, the filet mignon (Chinese style), and the China Fun sushi roll.  The Peking duck was delicious.  The skin was crisp and the duck itself was very juicy.  They also had a special sauce come with the duck so paired with that it packed a lot of great flavor.  And just the contrast of textures with the crispy skin and the moist duck made for a good bite.  The filet mignon was also very tasty.  Having a good sauce paired with it and pepper on top, you get a lot of flavor with just one bite.  The steak was cooked to perfection and will melt in your mouth.  The pepper on top added for a good crunch.  And the sauce with the dish was sweet but also a little spicy which went well with the savory steak.  And lastly we had the China Fun sushi roll.  It’s made with smoked salmon, shrimp, cucumber, shiso, and sprinkled with red tobiko.  This roll was a great sushi dish.  The salmon melted in your mouth.  The shrimp complimented the smokiness of the salmon well.  The cucumber helped give that fresh and bright feel to the dish.  And the cucumber paired with the red tobiko and shiso gave for a good crunch and contrast in texture.  And it was a pretty dish to look at too which is always great.

Overall, China Fun is a great place for dinner.  The food is delicious and the drinks are probably some of the best cocktails around.  The vibe of China Fun is very relaxed so no matter what the occasion is we guarantee that you will have a great time.
