Exclusive: Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Freida Pinto Talk New Film ‘Mr. Malcolm’s List’ [Video]

Set in the 19th Century, the film dives into the world of Regency Era England, complete with scandals, societies, elaborate parties, and eligible bachelors.

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù stars as the titular character Mr. Malcolm, London’s most eligible bachelor. The story follows Mr. Malcolm as he rejects Zawe Ashton’s character Julia Thistlewaite after she fails to meet one of his many requirements for a bride. As a result and eager to exact revenge, Thistlewaite convinces her friend, Freida Pinto’s Selina Dalton, to play the role of Mr. Malcolm’s perfect match. The story progresses and Mr. Malcolm starts to wonder whether he has found the perfect woman or rather the perfect hoax.

Writer Suzanne Allain originally told Mr. Malcolm’s story in a self-published book. She then adapted that book into a screenplay that was used for a short film. Following the phenomenal success of the short film, Allain’s novel was published officially by Berkley Press in 2020 and the feature film Mr. Malcolm’s List was set in motion.

The film also stars Theo James, Ashley Park, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen.

“What attracted me to the role was definitely doing something I’d never done before,” Freida Pinto said of portraying Selina. “As an actor, you constantly want to be challenged and do different stuff, but also stuff that breaks ground in some way, something that moves the needle and pushes the conversation forward.”

See Mr. Malcolm’s List in theaters on July 1.
