Derek Klena, Elizabeth Stanley, and the cast of Broadway’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’ perform iconic Alanis Morisette songs at their Barnes And Noble CD signing. The cast celebrated the newfound release of their cast album, based on Alanis Morisette’s hit album of the same name.
In June 1995, music lovers all over the world were touched by Alanis Morisette’s legendary album, Jagged Little Pill. Almost 25 years after its original release, the album is now a hit Broadway show playing at the Broadhurst Theater in Manhattan. The new show features the hit songs from the original album, which was close to Morisette’s heart, as they depicted aspects of her life including feelings of frustration and sadness over past relationships.

The show follows the Healeys, who are, from the outside, a seemingly perfect family. Mary Jane, a doting mother, is dedicated to her family, her husband Steve and two children, her son Nick and adopted daughter Frankie. On the outside looking in, the family looks perfectly happy. But secretly, their lives are rapidly spiraling out of control. Mary Jane is desperate to fix things before her family is torn apart, but it proves very quickly to be easier said than done.

Alanis Morisette’s album shows a grand theme of empowerment and growing through your struggles, and this is exactly what this show highlights. The cast came up on stage to perform 4 songs from the show, the original song Smiling (Sung by Elizabeth Stanley), and Morisette’s Hand In my pocket (Sung by Lauren Patten and Celia Rose Gooding), Mary Jane (Sung by Sean Allen Krill), and they closed out their performance with the final song in the show, a stunning new version of the infamous You Learn, sung flawlessly by the whole cast.
The mix of original music (done by by Michael Farrell and Guy Sigsworth) and Alanis Morisette’s celebrated songs create a beautiful mix of passion from the cast members, and their devotion to their performances is incredible. Composer Tom Kitt spoke highly of how incredible it is to see songs originally sung by Alanis on so many different types of voices, specifically male, saying, “Another great discovery when you do a musical like “Jagged Little Pill” is when you can take songs that Alanis sang and discover male voices, into rhythm material. And I know Alanis was a big fan of hearing this song in our brilliant Sean Krill’s voice.” Krill’s rendition of “Mary Jane” is gentle and beautiful, immersing audience members into his performance, and showing them that he has a story to tell.

Even in a setting when they are removed from their usual environment, and without their typical set and costumes, the cast still has a way of transcribing their emotions to create a beautiful performance, playing as characters who are damaged but empowering. Jagged Little Pill has been met with fabulous reviews, the cast has been celebrated and praised nonstop since it’s December 5th opening night. It’s fans alone are enough to show the popularity of the show, as their excitement for the cast is beautiful.
There are no fans like Broadway Fans, and the amount of supportive admirers in line to see the cast just proved that further. When asked who had seen the show, nearly every hand in the room went up enthusiastically. After the performance, the lucky fans got to meet and have their new CD’s signed by the cast. As Tom Kitt said when speaking about records, there’s something special about owning music. Owning music that has been signed by the people who sang it, is a whole new level of special.
