On August 10th, Cinespia put on a special tribute at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery to legendary filmmaker John Singleton screening Boyz N The Hood, sponsored by Amazon Studios.
John Singleton, who passed earlier this year, was a writer, producer and director from South Los Angeles. The movie was a social commentary of how life was in the “hood.” At the age of 24, Singleton was nominated for the Academy Award for best director for Boyz N the Hood. He became the youngest person and the first African American director to be nominated for that award. The picture was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
Congress has since deemed Boyz N the Hood culturally significant and preserved in the National Film Registry. The film launched his career into various genres, from the “Remember the Time” music video for Michael Jackson to 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Prior to the screening, guests were treated to photo ops and DJ sets from DJ Pooh and Questlove. Amidst the sea of fans gathered to enjoy the occasion and show their love for the late John Singleton were many astounding musicians such as Stevie Wonder and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The appreciation for not only the film but for Singleton only continues to grow.
