‘Wet Hot American Summer,’ Revisited

Now is a great time to start watching old cult classics.

Think about it! Halloween is right around the corner, Hurricane Joaquin is making it a Netflix kind of weekend, and everyone loves to feel nostalgic about their childhood.

And then there’s what we wish we had experienced when we were kids. Wet Hot American Summer was a 2001 film with Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, and basically everyone from SNL and other comedians. The entire camp is full of ten year olds enjoying themselves with various activities, while their camp counselors struggle to have fun.

Basically, these preteens have their lives together, while the counselors are laughing at how sad it is that they don’t. The film boasts a huge and hilarious cast like Judah Friedlander, Michael Ian Black, David Hyde Pierce and more, Most of its funny moments came from the kids. The cast provides the best comic relief from their idiotic actions, but it’s the kids’ deadpan humor that really drives the comedy home. Somehow, listening to a ten year old explaining a divorce to Molly Shannon while Ken Marino crashes his car into a tree brings you the comic relief that you expect from an eccentric but hilarious comedy such as this one.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is also a new series on Netflix with the same cast as the film, and it brings along just as many witty comments on what it is like to run a camp. Check out a trailer for the show below:
