Grammy Award nominated music artist Tyrone William Griffin Jr. better known as ‘Ty Dolla $ign’ arrived at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday (June 13th) to premiere a documentary that he co-produced with Live Nation Entertainment titled Still Free TC.
The premiere took place at the SVA Theatre in New York City and also included a special guest appearance from rapper YG, who has collaborated with Ty in the past.
The documentary which was filmed over a two year period follows Ty as he deals with his younger brother Gabriel’s 67 year prison sentence while recording albums, working with musical artist including Wiz Khalifah and Kanye West, guiding his daughter Jailynn as she steps into the music industry, supporting educational programs to mentor students and touring the world. The film also highlights that music was in Ty and his brother Gabriel’s blood from an early age, their father having been a member of the band Lakeside. Although Still Free TC is told from Ty Dolla $ign’s point of view, Gabriel, known as TC, speaks from prison about his conviction, as a means to express what can happen when being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Following the screening, Ty joined Wallo267, Jessica Jackson, YG, and Krista Worby for a panel discussion. Ty spoke about the importance of mentorship when asked by Wallo267 stating, “That’s the most important because like I was saying in the film at that time they made gang banging seem like it was just the coolest thing to do, but because of my pops and just having the right people around me kept me focused in the right direction.” During the discussion, Worby called TC, who spoke via phone from prison, thanking everyone for their efforts to help secure his release from prison.
To end the night, Ty, YG, and the guest headed over to the rooftop at Catch NY, where they got to taste Le Bon Argent, a luxury champagne brand that Ty Dolla $ign has partnered with. Ty also served as a deejay at the after-party.
