The history of Mondrian Los Angeles is downright extraordinary. Starting as an apartment building for local legends and celebrities in 1959, the Mondrian has taken on a spirit of its own, capitalizing on its prized location on Sunset Boulevard and proximity of the celebrity hangout Skybar. By 1985, Mondrian became the hotel of legendary status, and now, in 2019, it receives it’s latest renewal: an expensive refresher course in modern French and English-inspired interior design.
The renovation touches 236 newly designed rooms, a brand new lobby, a new meeting center, and a refreshed fitness center. The new standard guest rooms are light and airy, with a focus on bold accents used sparingly, as well as lighting features that reengage with wall space and views. Elegant use of gold and white inform the Victorian style the influences the whole renovation. Wood paneling harkens back to the earlier iterations of the Mondrian and contemporary art fills the walls.
The Skyloft at Mondrian Los Angeles
Bathrooms are reimagined with mirror bowl-style sinks, Mondrian’s signature robes and slippers, and more. A degree of whimsy and charm enters into the suites, which feature opaque room dividers, theatrically scaled furniture, and thoughtful color palettes, as well as custom television units which are adjustable. The rooms incorporate architectural layering that feels elegant and thoughtfully planned. Many rooms and suites feature balconies with views across West Hollywood and far beyond.
The crowning achievement is the Skyview Penthouse, a truly staggering arrangement which, at its minimum, features a substantial terrace, a full living room and dining room, a bathroom, a wet bar, a dressing area, and a bedroom (with en-suite bathroom, sitting area and wet bar) inspired by being in the clouds. The suite can be expanded to include a second bedroom and third bathroom, along with a secondary entrance. The result is a fully functioning penthouse with wide-open views of the LA basin to the Pacific Ocean. Of note? The shower features a window into the living room and views out to LA, offering cheeky play on the traditions that Mondrian has been known for. There is also the Skyloft, which features a terrace and an open-concept studio layout and includes a bathroom, dining room, living area, and wet bar.
The Skyview Penthouse at Mondrian Los Angeles
We were able to visit the Skyview Penthouse and found the view and space to be truly remarkable, both day and night. It is suitable for a substantial volume of guests, as our visit was accented by a live band and open bar.
With the renovation, Mondrian is launching the Icon Package, a two night stay in the Skyview Penthouse which includes a laundry list of experiences and perks, all unique to Mondrian’s situation in the heart of Los Angeles. All the experiences are iconic to LA, from daytime leisure at Skybar, one of the most classic pool destinations, a shopping session at Gucci, and exclusive vineyard experiences. Guests build a robust itinerary, which includes at a minimum complimentary breakfast at Ivory, the renowned Mondrian Restaurant, dinners in-room, in Las Vegas via private jet, or at Katsuya Brentwood by chauffeur, as well as table service poolside for six friends, custom art valued at $8,500, a celebrity stylist consultation (plus a clothing allowance), and way more. Ok, I’ll keep going. There’s a private shopping session at Gucci complete with a shopping credit and endless champagne, in-room couples massage, plus 24/7 butler service in-room provided by Estate Managers Coalition. Enjoy $1,500 room credit for drinks and room service, an in-room champagne bar stocked with Dom Perignon, welcome drinks at Skybar, as well as $1,000 to the Mondrian gift shop. Those are just the standard features of the package. The experiences continue with guests presented with the opportunity to choose from three LA-specific experiences, including a $10,000 photoshoot, a helicopter ride over the coastal cities, a private vineyard tour and wine tasting at Malibu Rocky Oaks Vineyard, or VIP seating at Hyde Lounge at STAPLES Center for Lakers Game. The list truly goes on. This is all in addition to two nights in the Skyview Penthouse. It’s not without a price (which seems downright reasonable): $100,000, or $50,000 per night. We’ll toast to that! Shop it here.
