‘The Color Purple’ Film Review – A Timeless Tale Through Song

Under the guiding hand of legendary producers Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders the iconic cinematic tale, The Color Purple, is told once again.

The Color Purple, the movie musical adaptation, is coming to screens this December 25, 2023. Featuring stars such as Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks, this film weaves together a tale of faith and resilience, illustrating a journey towards prosperity even in the face of the harshest conditions.

Get ready to have your heartstrings tugged as this timeless story unfolds in a new light. In this adaptation of The Color Purple, music and film intertwine into a story of pain and resilience.

Guided by the power of music and god, we follow Celie’s journey. Confronting the challenges of the separation from her beloved sister Nettie and her own two kids Adam and Olivia, all while enduring harsh conditions from both her own father and partner.  Abused and marginalized from the start, Celie stumbles through a maze of darkness, in a new town, seeking solace in the hope of a brighter future. Yet, she never loses sight of the guiding light – her strong bond in sisterhood with figures such as Sofia and Shug, and the belief of a God pushes her to keep going. Each blow and each loss, like the wrenching absence of her beloved sister, rips at the strained belief in her faith, yet somehow, against all odds, she clings to the faint hope of a new beginning. Through sheer resilience and the persistent support of her female peers, Celie blossoms from a victim of circumstance into a woman who carves her own path toward joy and redemption. Though the film ends Celie’s story goes far beyond the final frame.

Lines like “Don’t Let Them Run Over You. You Got To Fight,” were loudly quoted by the audience and songs such as “I Am Here” were sung at the Los Angeles premiere of The Color Purple, where they later ended the film with a standing ovation.

The Color Purple is a timeless story that continues to resonate, sparking conversations and touching hearts long after the credits roll.
