Saaqi Brings Classic Indian Flavors to Cocktail Scene

New York City is in the middle of a massive Indian dining and drink renaissance and New Yorkers are loving every second of it

TriBeCa’s Musaafer has been leading the charge for Indian cuisine and dining, but if you want to see how far the boundaries can actually be pushed for cocktails, you have to go downstairs.  Saaqi, Musaafer’s subterranean sibling, is entirely redefining the Indian cocktail den. Tucked beneath the main dining room, this striking basement space blends classic Indian ingredients andaromas with modern mixology. We stepped inside last week for a look at the new menu, and we loved the brilliant crossover of Indian heritage and global spirits.

Led by Program Director Ishrat Randhawa, the list reads like a map of the Indian subcontinent. Take the Channapatna Toys, a vibrant nod to the famous wooden dolls of Karnataka. Mixing Mijenta Blanco tequila, Muyu Jasmine Verde, and a hibiscus-infused tequila float, it’s a bright, unexpected balance of floral fruitiness and earthy herbs.

The real showstopper of the night was the Toda Embroidery. Built on coconut curry rum, Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin, curry cordial, and egg white, it’s finished with a few drops of curry oil. Before you even take a sip, the intense aroma of toasted curry leaves instantly transports you to a South Indian kitchen. On the palate, that savory spice hits perfectly against the creamy sweetness of the coconut. This drink feels less like a drink and more like liquid perfumery.

The kitchen holds its own, too. Corporate Executive Chef Mayank Istwal has built a tapas menu specifically designed to anchor these heavy-hitting drinks. The Paneer Bhurji Cornets are a must-order: smoky, mellow paneer tucked into crisp little cones, cut with the sharp bite of red onion and a bright serrano emulsion.

Walking out of that TriBeCa basement, it’s clear Saaqi isn’t just another nightlife spot, it’s an experience. They open daily at 5 PM for walk-ins only. Put it at the top of your list.
