The Knockturnal was on the scene last night for Alessia Cara’s first time headlining Radio City Music Hall.
The night started out with opener Nathan Sykes serenading the crowd with acoustic tracks after which he moved to the piano where she showed off his smooth skills. Nathan collaborated with G-Eazy earlier this year on the popular track “Give it up.” Nathan hails from England and was gushing about performing for such a big crowd and venue.
After Nathan warmed up the crowd, Sony Music’s Ruth B came out and woke the crowd up. Her down to earth personality really showcases what a talent she is, which is probably why she makes a perfect match to open for Alessia. While many artists hide behind spectacle, Ruth B’s talent speaks for itself. Her performance was fun and uplifting and definitely got the crowd hype with her sleepy yet soulful Pop.
You would never know that last night was Alessia’s biggest crowd ever from seeing her on stage. Even while battling a sore throat, she gave an amazing performance. Not only were her vocals on point, despite her ailment, but she also put on a great show with her signature girl and, just general people empowering energy. Alessia connected with her fans and said that she too feels like society’s expectations of beauty weigh heavy on her. Before performing “Scars to Your Beautiful,” Alessia showed a poem by one of her fans titled “a girl who stayed” encouraging those considering suicide that the best decision is to embrace yourself and stay. Alessia obviously played her hits, but for me the highlight was when she sang a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Swim Good.” Alessia gave fans another treat when she showed home videos of her as a toddler while singing “Seventeen.”
