Rising Star: Olivia Dean’s Magical NYC Debut

In advance of her debut album, Messy, Olivia Dean played a show at New York City’s infamous Le Poisson Rouge, in the heart of the West Village, on the 15th of June. This show marked a significant milestone for the up-and-coming artist, as the performance was her first in the United States.

Olivia’s magnetic and silky sound comes from across the pond, as she was born and raised in London, England. The 24-year-old soul powerhouse has released three E.P.s in advance of her first album; Ok Love You ByeWhat Am I Gonna Do On Sundays?, and Growth.

Following the pandemic, she marked her highly anticipated comeback at the Camden Jazz Cafe, where tickets for her performance sold out instantly. The performance gained immense popularity, garnering over 7 million views on TikTok as it went viral.

The scene and ambiance of the venue perfectly mirrored the aura Olivia and her band exhibited throughout the show. The smell of incense filled the room; Le Poisson Rouge became a haven of ethereal jazz vibes.

Olivia’s stage presence and charm remained prevalent throughout the set. The audience came alive with giddiness, spreading contagious smiles of happiness to see the brilliant artist in real life. Opening with her song “Echo.”  Fans were thrilled to see Olivia in real life. Their giddiness spread a smile across everyone’s faces.

Olivia and her performance transformed Le Poisson Rouge into a kaleidoscope of sound, soul, and open-hearted vulnerability.

Performing a diverse setlist of popular hits, unreleased music, fan favorites, a duet, and cover. Introducing her beloved anthem of empowerment and independence, “Be My Own Boyfriend,” Olivia explained how she doesn’t really believe in the idea of another half and how she perceives herself as being whole to begin, which the audience embraced each lyric with passion admiration. She had described the song as one of her favorite songs ever written.

The 24-year-old debuted performances of new album tracks such as “I Could Be A Florist” on the piano and “UFO” on the electric guitar. The talented artist also covered the late Aretha Franklin in a rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

Joining her on the stage that night included the superb and beloved Leon Bridges, elevating the night even more. Dean teamed up with Bridges to create a fresh rendition of “The Hardest Part,” a track originally released a few years back. The collaborative effort among the two breathed new life into the song, and audiences were ecstatic to witness such an iconic performance. Olivia also dueted the song alongside the Jonas Brothers at their show at the infamous Royal Albert Hall in London a few months back.
