‘Project Runway’s’ Layana Aguilar Shows Collection at NYFW

Project Runway finalist pairs trendy silhouettes and scuba material in her New York Fashion Week presentation.

Layana Aguilar of Project Runway fame debuted her new Spring/Summer 2017 collection for her fans and friends on September 10th at New York Fashion Week in Chelsea’s Highline Loft.

One by one, the models emerged from backstage in an array of vibrant teal, white, and black mesh and neoprene ensembles.  The collection as a whole was clean and cohesive due to the consistency in fabric across the board, allowing the fun and simple styles to shine and giving them an edge.  There was a healthy mix of mesh and printed crop tops with statements like “#GirlBoss” and “Only Love Will Set Us Free” and delicate hummingbirds embroidered across the chest.

The collection was also balanced beautifully as Aguilar expertly paired voluminous skirts or wide leg pants and midriff cutouts.  These typically feminine silhouettes had a darker, cool edge in part due to the brilliant blue/purple smokey eye makeup.  Each garment was tailored to fit like a glove, simultaneously being expensive and accessible.  Her clothes walked right up to the demarcating line between commercial and fashion forward without crossing it.
