‘The Life & Death of Kenyon Phillips’ Debuts At The Box March 11

Early Monday evening we were invited to an exclusive preview of The Life & Death of Kenyon Phillips, an amazing new show at trendy lower east side nightclub the Box.

The show, described as a dreamlike autobiographical rock opera, uses an interactive rock-cabaret-variety show format to tell the story of death and resurrection.   Our preview began with the funeral for Mr. Phillips, as we were invited to view his coffin and pay our respects.  Suddenly, to the ‘funeral director’s’ mock surprise, Kenyon lept from his coffin and began the show.  Accompanied by an all-female backing band dressed in dreamy white gowns, Kenyon led the enthusiastic crowd through a sampling of songs and performances from the show.  A highlight was when he decided to order a pizza, only when the ‘pizza delivery girl’ arrived on stage she performed a wild acrobatic dance – danging from a rope high above the stage.

“I hope people can see this show and forgive themselves for their sins,” said Phillips. “I want to take them on a journey from darkness, fear and death into light, love and life.”

Director Cady Huffman is taking a lighter approach to the project. “I’m beating Kenyon up for a few weeks,” laughs Huffman. “Then you get to have him.”

We can’t wait to see what other surprises are in store for the full performance of the Life & Death of Kenyon Phillips when it opens on March 11th at the Box.
