On The Scene: Swatch Times Square Store Opening

Pop It! In Your Pocket

The idea, ingenious; the design, simple; the results, entertaining.

Swatch, the Swiss watch-making company, celebrated its “Night of Pop” event at its newly opened Times Square location on May 3. The opening served to usher in the company’s new POP Collection, a number of watches whose watch face can be “popped out” and interchanged among different bands and other uses, such as necklaces, tie clips, and more.

With music from former Katy Perry stylist-turned-DJ Johnny Wujek, the new flagship store truly mirrored the event’s namesake, even with POP watch wearing models Olivia Culpo, Nina Agdal, and Chanel Iman. Not only were guests invited to gorge on some Pop Rocks-lined cotton candy drinks, but the lights shining within the store sure put down all the lights of Times Square to shame. With bright neon lighting illuminating the inside decor, Swatch truly stayed true to theme, popping with every opportunity.

Not missing a beat with the puns, chocolate drizzled Garrett Popcorn was served in elegant cone cups. The hor d’oeuvres were awesome. Guac-topped sushi, stuffed prosciutto balls, and “popped” chicken ranged in taste from delectable to highly savoring. And the presentation itself was a change from the norm– instead of having separate trays among the waitstaff, the food was placed on one long tray, or in some cases, rods, and moved along through the crowded congregation. Logistical walking issues aside, the food was devoured in mere seconds, just a testament to how tasty it actually was.

But back to the watches. The POP Collection truly focuses on the colors, themes, and designs of the accessory, which is why Swatch decided to give the wearer total control in how they wanted their watch to be perceived. The watch face is able to be popped out of the wrist band, and then snapped back into another, allowing for complete customization according to the wearer’s wishes. Not only this, but the watches come with a clip that can be worn on ties, in pockets, and even as a money holder if one wishes. Necklaces were worn with the watch face, proving that Flavor Flav never truly left the lime light in terms of wearable time.

In addition to the watches, guests were encouraged to try on Swatch’s new line of glasses that are similarly customized with snap-in frames and lens. Not only can you change the look of your watch to match your outfit, you can now change your glasses to match your mood as well.

Tattly was also in attendance, offering cool tattoos that seemed to “pop” off your arm, all the while, there was a fun POP photo booth and Xbox Live screen that acted as a virtual reality Snapchat filter, following your every move and placing glasses, watches, hats, and more on your person as you walked.
