PaleyFest NY, hosted by The Paley Center for Media, concluded on October 22 with a riveting panel discussion with the CBS Mornings team at The Paley Museum in New York City.
Some of the biggest names in morning television were in the room holding a timely and topical conversation for a captivated audience. The event also featured a CBS Mornings highlight reel with the co-hosts and executive producer of the award-winning broadcast. Participants included: Gayle King, Cohost; Tony Dokoupil, Cohost; Nate Burleson, Cohost; Vladimir Duthiers, Featured Host; and Shawna Thomas, Executive Producer. The discussion was moderated by Lisa Ling, Contributor, CBS News.

Never one to conform, Gayle King, veteran journalist including with Oprah Daily, walked into the event in style: with mismatched shoes! She recently attended Glamour’s 2024 Women of the Year Awards held earlier in October and done the same red hue as her PaleyFest ensemble. When asked about how CBS Mornings and the ever-changing news landscape has evolved during her 12 years at the show, King noted “it’s no longer 24/7, it’s 24 seconds,” acknowledging how quickly things shift. She also shared that when reporting on big stories, “we’re not in a race to be first, we’re in a race to be right.”

Lisa Ling joked that this event is very special because it is past all of the cohosts’ bedtimes. You wouldn’t know that nightlife has become more difficult due to early mornings and family obligations for Ling. She looked fresh and fiery in her black leather jacket, pinstripe dress and bold blue necklace. Ling began reporting at 18, covering news around world, co-hosting “The View,” and now a part of CBS Mornings among other major accomplishments.

Vladimir Duthiers told the story about how he first got his start in journalism at 40 years old. When discussing authenticity, he shared that “what you see on the air, is who we are when we’re not on the air.” Nate Burleson told the audience that his three favorite interviews have been with Michael J. Fox, Denzel Washington and Barack Obama. Burleson noted that being a cohost on CBS Mornings is the most fulfilling job he’s ever had. Tony Dokoupil said that Executive Producer Shawna Thomas is “the glue that holds the show together.” Thomas discussed the importance of CBS Mornings’ coverage as we head into the upcoming election and the days following.
