For the first time since 2019, The New York International Auto Show returned to the Javits center in New York.
It was also the first time since 2019 that the World Car Awards were able to take place in person. Taking home five of the six awards this year is the Volkswagen ID.4, the car that won the World Electric Car of the Year award last year. This year, the panel leans even more into the battery-powered future; electric vehicles were rewarded with five of the six awards.
Hyundai came away with the biggest prize of the day as its new Ioniq 5 SUV won three awards, including the award for World Car of the Year.
Electric Vehicles had a record year beyond the Ioniq 5 as they took home awards in two additional categories as well. The Mercedes-Benz EQS 2022 takes home the prize for World Luxury Car, while the Audi e-tron GT 2022 clinches the title of World Performance Car. World Urban Car Award has been won by the Toyota Yaris Cross, which is not available in the United States.
This is not the only good news to come out of the Auto Show. Before the World Car Awards started, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul appeared. In an announcement made today, Governor Kathy Hochul stated that New York State’s electric vehicle programs and an electric vehicle test track powered by the New York Power Authority’s EVolve NY high-speed chargers will be featured prominently throughout the event.

Last but not least, Governor Hochul announced ten fast chargers that can charge compatible electric vehicles in 30 minutes at LaGuardia Airport through NYPA’s EVolve NY fast charging network.
“Electric vehicles are key to decarbonizing our transportation system and as the global auto industry invests heavily in the latest zero-emission vehicles, New York will continue to focus on expanding our cross-state fast charging network and incentivizing EVs, which will help us transition to a healthier, greener future,” Governor Hochul said. “I am proud to welcome the New York International Auto Show back to New York in person this year and I encourage everyone to visit the Auto Show to see how EVs are fast becoming integral to New York’s clean energy economy.”
This was a great way to kick off the New York International Auto Show. The show will be open for attendees from April 15th through April 24th.
