Just when you thought you were woke, think again, you probably could use some more ‘waking’ up to do. Oh, and if you’re one of those people that finds the title offensive chances are you’re one of the very people who should be watching this show in the first place. With nearly a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and praise from the New York Times, Dear White People is a show to be reckoned with and it’s back for a third season.
Created by and written by Justin Simien, the show takes place in a predominantly white Ivy-League college where the narrative revolves around the students of color and their experiences. The show tackles important subjects such as appropriation, social injustice, assimilation, and other topical issues that very much need to be spoken about. What we can’t forget though, is that this show is still a comedy and there are some very funny moments throughout the show.
“I think Dear White People balances the tough parts and the good parts the same way black people juggle it in life. We learn in this nation that we have to be able to code switch. We have to be able to play both sides at times,” said Yvette Nicole Brown on the red carpet. “My momma has a saying, you laugh to keep from crying so when things are hard you find a way to find some humor in it so I think that’s what Justin and this wonderful cast does every single season.”
