On The Scene: “Abcdefu” Singer Gayle Shines at NYC’s Mercury Lounge

If you’ve scrolled through the popular app TikTok at any point within the last few months, chances are you’re no stranger to the voice of seventeen year old pop singer Gayle.

On Tiktok alone, there are over 2.5 million videos made with her song in the background, as well as countless spin offs and alterations to the trendy hit. This doesn’t even hold a candle to spotify, where the song has over 525 million streams, and she has over 30 million monthly listeners. She captures the heart of what so many teenagers feel in her music, which promotes relatability and in turn, brings about well crafted art in a way that inspires. It’s such a huge reason why the songs she makes resonate so well on popular teen dominated apps like Tiktok, she’s a singer for a whole generation.

Gayle took her many talents to the stage on Tuesday night, playing a miraculous show downtown at Manhattan’s Mercury Lounge, as part of her very first tour. Her energy on stage is unmatched, and it’s so clear to see her passions through her music. She performed songs from her new EP, A study of the human experience volume 1, including Kiddie Pool, Luv Starved, a cover of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ Bad Reputation, and of course her iconic Abcdefu. Gayle got emotional as she looked to the audience to tell a little bit about the song before she performed it as the final song of the evening, citing how it changed her life, the success of it opening up so many doors for her and allowing her to showcase her talent to so many adoring fans. The whole room knew the words to the song and helped Gayle to sing it. While discussing some of her other songs prior to performing them, she told stories about the exact point in her life when she’d written them, and how they resonate to this day. She talked about being so much younger during the writing process and how the pandemic had put a damper on her plans to perform them, but how she’s since grown up with the songs. There’s a beauty in that, in the way she’s grown through her music. She talked about how her songs represented how stupid her generation can be sometimes, and sang about the human experience. The lively venue couldn’t have been more overjoyed to see her live, and we know that this will be the first of many tours for the teen.

We are overjoyed to have gotten to experience the New York Leg of Gayle’s first tour!  Check out tout dates, her music, and so much more here
