Film Review: ‘The Shallows’

On June 21st, The Knockturnal headed to AMC Loews for the world premiere of “The Shallows,” a thriller starring Blake Lively and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

The Gossip Girl star Blake Lively surprises us once again with her talent in this new movie. The Shallows is the story of a girl who travels to Mexico to find herself. We soon find out she is having personal problems and difficulties with making choices for her future. Rightly named a “paradise,” the set (which is an island in Australia) is home to the shark movie that will have you at the edge of your seat.

As the movie was playing one could hear screams, laughter and clapping. Not only was this movie extremely emotionally gripping and did what a good thriller should do, but the scenery was breathtaking. Since the movie has only one set, which is this beautiful island and the ocean, it had the potential to become a stale movie. Director Serra however, was able to make this movie so dynamic, one did not have the opportunity to lean back at any point. We were able to experience the thrill as well as appreciate this crystalline scenery through screen.

The production of this movie was not the easiest, but Jaume Collect-Serra was able to see these obstacles as an invitation for invention and creativity. Along with the excellent performances by Blake Lively and her supporting cast and the crew members, they were able to create a shark thriller like no other.
