[INTERVIEW] Designer Phillip Lim Discusses Return To NYFW

In this interview, designer Phillip Lim discusses his fashion line, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s return to the New York Fashion Week runway for the first time in four years.

The two-part event, sponsored by Baileys Liqueur, was one for the books with A-list attendees such as Kimora Lee Simmons and Elaine Welteroth followed by an equally star-studded afterparty at Bangkok Supper Club. Continue reading below for Phillip Lim’s feelings towards his return the runway, the planning process behind the show, and his favorite way to drink Baileys new chocolate cream liqueur.

Congratulations on your return to the runway! How did your mood/mindset differ from previous Fashion Weeks compared to this year?

It felt new again and I was nervous in a way I haven’t been since my early days of showing. But I also felt incredibly purposeful. We took a break from the runway because we were showing without truly showing up.  I spent the last four years showing up and standing up for things I believe in. I don’t consider myself an activist because there are amazing people out there risking their lives and their livelihoods to make their voices heard. But I like to say, I have been activated. And so, with that mindset, with that purpose, with the resolve that 3.1 Phillip Lim is an Asian American fashion brand for change – one with the core values of community, inclusivity, diversity – we returned to New York Fashion Week. And it feels amazing.

What was the thought process behind choosing the music for the show?

The music was an original score composed by my longtime collaborator, Sebastien Perrin and was inspired by the sounds of Columbus Park in Chinatown, where the constant stream of youth, elders  and everyone in between congregate harmoniously. I refer to the park as a ‘community  living room’. Community has been such a big part of shaping and reshaping my perspective these past four years.

Which was personally your favorite piece from the collection?

I would have to say our mesh flats which are an homage to the Chinese slipper – they are a testament to the many that came before, who made this space possible; to our elders who built this — the nameless and faceless.

What message do you hope people take away from the SS2024 collection?

It is inspired by New York, by the diverse and multifaceted nature of this city. By the vibrancy and electricity that inspires New Yorkers to use clothes as a vehicle for joy.

Bailey’s sponsored your show and afterparty. What’s your favorite way to drink Bailey’s new chocolate liqueur?

Baileys Chocolate Liqueur is velvety-smooth and delectable. The Chocolate Martini is my favorite. We had the chance to enjoy it served at my show and at the ‘31st Hour’ Cocktail afterparty. I particularly love to serve up Baileys Chocolate Liqueur chilled or as a dessert shot for when I feel like having something a little more special.

Try Phillip’s Baileys Chocolate Martini yourself using the following recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1.5oz Baileys Chocolate Liqueur
  • 0.75oz Vodka
  • 1oz Fresh Espresso
  • 0.25oz Simple Syrup

Method:

  1. Add all ingredients to cocktail shaker
  2. Shake well
  3. Fine strain into coupe/martini glass
  4. Garnish with vanilla cold foam and/or three espresso beans
