Governor’s Island Is This Summer’s Place To Go In NYC

Bringing everything you need to party this summer, and only a ferry ride away

Last week we got a chance to take a stroll around Governor’s Island and discover some of the new offerings available to guests including the new Fishers Island Lemonade stand and the newly opened Gitano Island.

Our first stop was at Taco Vista which is conveniently located near the ferry stop at Governor’s Island.  One of our favorite canned cocktails, Fishers Island Lemonade, has recently partnered with Taco Vista and created a cute lounge area that includes a variety of activities.  Guests can grab tacos and sip some Fishers Island Lemonade in the shade (now served in a signature frozen slushy), play cornhole, and enjoy the view from the island.

Our next stop was Gitano Island, the newly opened tropical beach club and restaurant.  Just minutes away from the ferry stop, this 27,000 square foot waterfront venue has everything you would need this summer.  When we stepped foot on the sandy floors of Gitano Island, we immediately felt the chill beachy vibes.  With palm trees and other tropical plants surrounding the area, Gitano Island brings the flair of a tropical island to New York City.

And for Hampton’s goers, this reminded us of the iconic Surf Lodge.  But the charm of Gitano Island is that you don’t have to trek hours by driving to get there – it’s just a quick and easy ferry ride.  Gitano Island features an extensive food menu, an amazing cocktails list, two dining pergolas, an open-fired kitchen, and a number of lounges and cabanas.  Gitano Island’s extensive menu includes signature Mezcal Cocktails and an authentic, Modern Mexican Menu, cooked in open fire. The new menu combines the familiar favorites like the Guacamole, Chorizo Con Queso, Watermelon Salad, Crab Tostada  and Branzino in Banana Leaf with some exciting new additions like Mexican Lobster Roll, Crispy Chicken al Recado Rojo, Sopes de Guisados and Tamales de Pipián.  Gitano Island is open 7 days a week for both brunch and dinner.  Gitano Island also has a dance floor where guests can party the night away under a giant disco ball that is suspended over the water.  Throughout the summer, Gitano Island is planning on using the tented stage to bring an exciting program of local and international DJs as well as live artist performances.

With these two new offerings on Governor’s Island, it wouldn’t be presumptuous to say that Governor’s Island is going to be this summer’s “it” spot for everyone.  With perfect views, amazing food, and a party scene to boot, Governor’s Island can be every New Yorker’s vacation spot without traveling far at all.
