‘Frozen’ is Coming to Broadway!

Just when we thought we’d seen the last of it…

Disney has recently announced that Frozen, the record-breaking animated film from 2013, will be made into a Broadway musical. The show is set to open in the Spring of 2018, and here’s a breakdown of what we know so far.

The writers from the movie will be working on the show, with Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon”, “Avenue Q”) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez writing the music and lyrics. The book will be by Jennifer Lee, author of the screenplay for the film. The rest of the production team is absolutely star-studded with Broadway production veterans. Alex Timbers, having formerly directed “Peter and the Starcatcher”, “Rocky”, and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”, will direct “Frozen”. Peter Darling, who won a Tony for “Billy Elliot” and was nominated for another for “Matilda the Musical”, will be the choreographer. Costume and set design will be in the hands of seven time Tony winner Bob Crowley, whose theater credits include “Aida” and “Mary Poppins”.

Exact dates for the production, a theater, a cast, and other specifics remain unannounced, but for now we have to let it go and just enjoy knowing that it’s in the works.

The film, starring the voices of Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, was quite a smash when it was released, earning $1.3 billion worldwide and winning two Academy Awards. If this is any indication of how mad people will be over the stage musical version, Disney is looking at another runaway Broadway success.
