Formally Untrained: Art Exhibition by Ben Katz & Jordan Barker

The opening reception of Formally Untrained, proved to be an immersive showcase exploring the works of New York City artists Katz and Barker. Together, these two artists showcase works in symbiosis to a highly curated crowd.

The public opening reception in October boasted the skills and talent of each artist whose work was represented. Ben Katz, is constantly exploring new techniques and mediums and his work is continuously breaking new ground. Evident from the works on display, his work uses various materials including repurposed tech and a wide variety of found objects. Some of the newer methods are his work with antique findings enveloped in pigmented encaustics, which create complex, three-dimensional works of art.

Observing Katz’s work will make you think about the ever-evolving digital world and humanity’s increasingly symbiotic relationship with technology. Katz sees his work as social commentary and uses it as an outlet for his often controversial opinions on modern life. This was beautifully and innovatively captured during the gallery pieces on display.

Additionally, Jordan Barker is inspired by the sensation of touch and draws inspiration from the isolation of the pandemic. Each one of us experienced our mind opening new possibilities and exploring new ideas – Barker did so by layering different materials and mediums on canvases, creating what is now an extensive body of large-scale abstract expressionist-style pieces. Impressively, Barker created most of his works using his bare hands – his process created a unique sensory experience for his audience, making his work distinct to the touch.

Both curators, Dojchinov and Mehta have a keen eye for storytelling and high-quality pieces of art that speak to audiences from all backgrounds, being able to resonate with the pieces they are experiencing.
