Film Review: TV One’s ‘Love Under New Management’

“Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story” walks us through the bumpy road of the singer’s life and career.

Made for television and produced by TV One, new movie “Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story” is the first in a series of Unsung-inspired biographic films the network is planning to release.

Telling the life story of a singer Miki Howard, played by Teyonah Parris (Chiraq), filmmakers managed to create a film that causes laughter as well as squeezes tears from our eyes.

Miki Howard definitely had a full life. Up and downs in her love life and musical career as well as battling and winning with a drug addiction have made her a survivor and a heroine for a lot of women.

An outstanding performance from Teyonah Parris as well as Darius McCrary and Gary Dourdan joining her on screen create an incredible and captivating experience. Miki’s most famous songs such as “Love Under New Management,” “Ain’t Nobody Like You,” or “Come Share My Love,” and wardrobe partially consisting of her original pieces make up the look and feel of the R&B scene of 1980-90s.

During post-screening Q&A, the audience heard from Miki Howard herself, director Cristine Swanson, Teyonah Parris, Darius McCrary and Indira Khan (who plays her mother Chaka Khan in the film). Miki Howard emphasized the importance of existence of movies like Love Under New Management to tell African-Americans stories. He hopes shining a light on diverse artists and creating relatable art will encourage African-Americans to create more.
