Exclusive: Lamorne Morris, Sasheer Zamata and the Cast Talk Hulu’s New Show ‘Woke’ [Video]

This is the real San Francisco treat. Lamorne Morris stars in ‘Woke,’ a show about a cartoonist on the verge of mainstream success who finds himself faced with the realities of police brutality and racism at large. I’m DRAWN to this.

It’s a wild ride, with our protagonist slowly unraveling throughout the season, while also reaching higher levels of consciousness. The show seamlessly blends capital I – Important – messages with humor, leaving you laughing and reflecting at the same damn time.

There’s an episode mid-season called ‘Black People For Sale’ that is simply the best television I’ve seen in years. And I have seen so much television this year…

Sasheer Zamata, a longtime fave, and my career north star plays the editor of a decidedly woke publication, a dry-witted, sarcastic, and passionate advocate for black folks. She brings a wealth of warmth to this role, seemingly hard-nosed at first but ultimately revealing a vulnerable and kind heart. I would live and die for a spin-off

The cast has frenetic chemistry, which you’ll see in both the show and these interviews. It almost feels like they’re simply riffing the lines; everything is conversational and sharp and really easy on the ears. I’ve never used that phrase in my life, not sure why I started now, but it works, I guess. Peep these exclusive interviews above, they’re fun!

The show premieres Wednesday, September 9 on Hulu.
