All eight episodes for season 1 of the show Rap Sh!t, created by Issa Rae, are available on HBO Max.
The show focuses on two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna, and Mia, played by Aida Osman and KaMillion. Shawna’s character is motivated by creating songs that matter and straying away from the sexualized brand that is portrayed for most female artists. She soon reconnects with Mia, who’s a single mother working hard to make something of herself and overcome the limitations she feels society has placed on her. The two decide to create a rap group and soon realize that popularity has its upsides and downsides. Each character in the show is hustling to get to the status they would like to reach socially and financially. As the series progresses, with the help of those around them, Shawna and Mia are in the process of building the platform needed to seduce and scheme successfully.
The Knockturnal spoke with Daniel Augustin, RJ Cyler, and Jonica Booth, who play the characters Maurice, Lamont, and Chasity, about their roles in the show. They also discussed pivotal moments in their personal lives that helped shape their mindsets today and what they hope viewers take away from the series.
