Miles Brown, who plays the adored Jack Johnson on ABC’s Emmy nominated comedy series, Black-ish is growing up and delving into other aspects of his career.
Black-ish is on its seventh season and fans are more invested than ever. The show is known for tackling hard and sometimes controversial topics with grace and education while offering a deeper look into differing perspectives. Brown has been in the spotlight since he was a little boy and is seen as a role model to many. However, he is unphased by the potential pressure he could feel to be a leader and speak on issues that many avoid, “people have always known Black-ish as a show that tackles really controversial stuff…It’s something that we expect is going to be a big deal and is something that we always have to talk about before anything happens,” Brown said.
While acting is a major part of Brown’s life, many are unaware that he also has a deep passion for rapping which was influenced by his father, Jack Brown also known as Wildchild. At just four years old, hip hop legend Big Daddy Kane asked Brown to join him on stage and rap a verse. “I met him [Big Daddy Kane] backstage and I freestyled for him and he was like that’s fire and then he brought me on stage and I did the same thing I did for him; I was dancing and everything. It was a crazy experience,” Brown recalled. From there he found his love for hip hop and performing which has deepened over the years and developed into him being ready to start a career in music. In 2020, Brown released his debut hip hop album, We the Future. “Black-ish gave me that inspiration to speak about what’s going on with Gen-Z, mental health, police brutality, all the things going on right now that no one else is really bringing up,” Brown said. The 15-track album includes features with some top names in music and icons in hip hop like Slick Rick and Jidenna and was cosigned by Method Man, Redman, and Macklemore. Now the dynamic, multihyphenated talent is looking to expand his career with dreams of one day performing with the likes of Drake, Travis Scott, and Kendrick Lamar.
