Desigual Walks the Runway at #NYFW

Desigual’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection features striking patterns, heavy textiles, and a nod to fashion’s past.

Desigual’s gorgeous Fall/Winter 2016 collection stomped down the runway to a heavy bass and thumping beat at Day 1 of New York Fashion Week this past Thursday.  The show was huge, even former America’s Next Top Model judges Nigel Barker and Miss J. Alexander were in attendance in the front row.  True to form, the ensembles were brilliantly crafted; heavy fabrics and textiles and bold brocade and geometric patterns were gorgeously paired with classic silhouettes.  The looks had structure and form, but had beautiful movement on the runway.

The entire collection had a remarkable duality to it–though the pieces were inspired by the fashion of decades past, the velvet and paisley evoking 60s and 70s style while the brocade, embroidery, and headscarfs eluded to 30s and 40s, the entire collection was fresh, fun, and light.  The color palette was exquisite, featuring burnt oranges, emerald greens, magentas, and cobalts.  It wasn’t until the show was nearly over when the first black and white look took the runway.

The styling of this collections was subtle yet superb; everything flowed beautifully.  All the models wore fabulous heeled ankle boots with accents of denim and sported a smudged, soft terra-cotta eye.  In fact, all the accessories, the floppy berets, pork pie hats, and handbags, paired extremely well with the collection.

Desigual cites the inspiration for the collection: “The metropolis — from the ancients to the 21st century — is a meeting place for people from all over the world, of different cultures, to come to share and experience their own stories.  Samarkland, the capital of the silk route; Alexandria, the capital of knowledge; Constantinople, Byzantium that’s now Istanbul, where Asia and the West come together and borders are blurred.  Desigual looks to the vibrancy of city life and all of its creative lifeblood for its Fall/Winter 2016 collection.  The collection’s aesthetic is a metaphor for the 21st century city, visualized as a cultural collage, where technology, trends and a global culture now are one.  Every day is an opportunity to express yourself and wear your attitude to face the world, especially against the backdrop of the urban bustle.  Today, thanks to new technologies, new trends and lifestyles are projected across the entire planet and cities serve as information hubs and portals to a common global culture.  Fashion has become an ambassador, the visual clue to our collective conscious.  And Desigual, with it’s eyes turned toward the women who compose urge style of the city streets, sees the 21st century as the space to be fully you.”
