Actor Aml Ameen (I May Destroy You) escapes to a world of an alternate reality in Parallel. In the film, he plays multiple versions of a character whose friends discover a portal to parallel universes right in their attic. Imagine if you could correct past wrongs, if you could be the one to introduce the world to ideas unheard of, if you could run into lost loved ones, find love once unrequited. As glorious as that all may sound, Parallel follows the path of a thriller. And as things go south, four friends discover messing with space and time isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Ameen, Martin Wallström (Mr. Robot), Georgia King (Vice Principals), and Mark O’Brien (Blue Bayou) play “Devin,” “Noel,” “Leena,” and “Josh” in the dramatic take on sci-fi and Isaac Ezban’s first English-spoken film.

Drama aside—if you offer a parallel universe with the ability to travel into the past, Ameen might still be up for it. He would not mind being able to ameliorate past actions in order to alter the future. The Brit identifies as a Back to the Future fanatic. He’s interested in what the upcoming years hold and the concept of time overall. For instance, Ameen is currently video-chatting from London where is directing romantic comedy Boxing Day. His directorial debut and co-written feature gained inspiration from his own romantic and family history. It stars himself, Aja Naomi King, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
His Parallel character, Devin, also flips back to chapters of his romantic past and upbringing. One of his motives in the film is being able to find a universe where he could finally be with his crush. The second, Devin seeks to amend his troubled relationship with his father. Devin gave Ameen the chance to sideline his natural London/British-Caribbean accent for an American one. He also took the opportunity to shape the character with his Black identity, as screenwriters did not have a specific race in mind for Devin in the script.

All in all, Ameen got very enthusiastic when talking about this role. He raved of Ezban’s childlike wonder as a director and the collision between fantasy and reality that Parallel brings to the table.
