Saturday Night Live aired a special episode in tribute to Prince last night.
The special, Goodnight Sweet Prince, opened with a speech by Jimmy Fallon, who reflected on Prince’s strong presence and energy on SNL. “Other people may have been on the show more times, or performed more frequently, but there was always something different about a Prince performance. It was special, it was an event, it was Prince,” Fallon said.
“Fashion, music, every single thing, you just couldn’t take your eyes off him. He had his own color.”
Goodnight Sweet Prince featured Prince’s several musical performances and sketches of Prince impersonations from the show’s history. The special also showed footage from the Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary after party last year, where Jimmy Fallon convinced Prince to put on what would be a legendary performance. Former SNL cast member Tim Kazurinsky shared the clip on YouTube, where Prince is seen jamming on his guitar and performing his 1984 hit, “Let’s Go Crazy.”
Prince passed away at his home in Paisley Park on April 21st, 2016. In his life, he sold more than 100 million records, won seven Grammys, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
