Zarin Fabrics doesn’t seem real in this day and age. The Lower East Side institution celebrates nearly 80 years of success in NYC.
You walk through the stacks of fabrics in awe. Partially, the impression comes from the sheer amount of fabrics Zarin has amassed then the quality of them all. It’s mostly arranged in tidy, easy-to-access rolls, ordered by texture or color. However, that doesn’t account for the 9 and 10-foot-high stacks of miscellaneous fabrics that fill the area around. Its like being in a library and knowing you’ll never get to all of it in a single lifetime. That’s what Zarin is like. But for now, we can run through its aisles, feeling and touching anything that looks captivating. But Zarin doesn’t stop there – any fabric you see can be custom made to fit on a chair, into clothing, curtains, drapes, blankets and more. Yes, Zarin is a full suite organization, with highly knowledgable staff on hand to give you a sense of a project.
Zarin celebrated 79 years in tasteful, understated fashion. With a glowing list of interior designers and fashion phenoms as their clientele, the main floor showroom is filled with chic oddities and furniture, not pieces that will be lost, but not statement pieces either. Pieces that enhance rather than frame or steal. With light snacks and wine from Alex, there was a coziness and stylishness not always seen, especially in the quickly-changing Lower East Side. Here’s to many more years of Zarin, and many more hours spent perusing its massive archive of 79 years.
