Wale Drops PowerBall and Announces ‘Shine’

DC based emcee, Wale has returned with a new freestyle track coupled with a new album announcement.

Wale’s had an interesting career so far, hopping on the Maybach Music label where he would create jams that were wildly unique relative to their roster. In the midst of “coke” and “street” rappers on MMG Wale’s music, while not exactly fit for the label of conscious rap, always had a strong positive vibe. That’s remained a constant through his discography. However, there’s been a steady change in Wale attempting to add more edge and power to his flow and the beats he chooses to go over. Although this has been happening in alignment with the main criticism of his music being too soft, it does feel like a natural change.

After The Album About Nothing Wale’s future was unclear. Rumors circulated that Meek Mill wanted Wale off his record, and while some fans found his previous record enjoyable other thought having Jerry Seinfeld on an album was corny. It seems with this single/freestyle, Wale has not wavered from his progression, sticking to the positivity in lyrics and upping the power in his voice. “Powerball” is most definitely an enjoyable track and Wale sounds a lot more comfortable throwing around the extra bravado than he has on previous releases.

Announcing his upcoming record Shine alongside this track is a smart move, as it really does give an addictive sample of what may become Wale’s best album.
