Unifying the Islands: Jason Momoa Leads Apple TV+’s Chief of War

Told from the perspective of Native Hawaiians, this drama miniseries explores how the islands’ most sacred warriors unified in the 18th century. From the creative collaboration between actor Jason Momoa and producer Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett comes a new Apple TV+ series based on the foundational stories that shape Polynesian culture. Momoa stars as Ka’iana, a war chief described as a “war chief who runs from war.”

His journey takes a transformative turn when he ventures beyond the islands and witnesses the widespread colonization of people around the world—ultimately recognizing that the same phenomenon is unfolding in Hawai‘i. The series thoughtfully examines how legacy, power, and tradition intersect with a rapidly changing world.

The Knockturnal spoke with Jason Momoa and the cast of Chief of War to explore these themes and how the series shines a light on the revered figures of Hawaiian history and culture.

Chief of War premieres on Apple TV+ on August 1, 2025, with the first two episodes. New episodes will be released weekly through September 19.
