TV Review: ‘Seven Seconds’

Gathering up my snacks, I prepared myself to watch the Netflix original television series, Seven Seconds, a show that would later take me on an intense emotional rollercoaster in just under 60 minutes.

The series takes place in Jersey City, New Jersey beginning with the tragedy of 15-year-old black cyclist Brenton Butler after he is badly injured as result of a hit-and-run accident. The crime drama follows the impact of this accident and racial tension that ensues with the case. With a white police officer behind the wheel of the vehicle, the series follows as the department attempts to cover-up the incident. The series essentially depicts the accident and the aftermath of it all, tying in themes of racial injustice as well as social injustice that is seen in our current day society. It also features Emmy-award winner Regina King as Brenton’s churchgoing mother, Latrice as well as a host of similarly talented actors. 

Seven Seconds packs in heavy themes with multidimensional characters that properly set up the series. In just the pilot alone, the series introduces an extremely complex situation that can only get better as the series continues. Every character involved is extremely dynamic and intriguing, which captivates the audience, leaving one with the urge to get to know the characters more. Not only that but also that storyline is extremely well-written. The pilot alone sets up a captivating first season. The show keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as they follow a family and the situations they face after such a tragic accident they endure. A guaranteed binge-worthy television series.
