TV Review: ‘Billions’ Episode 1

Showtime premiered its new drama Billions last Sunday

Showtime premiered its new series starring Paul Giamatti (Straight Outta Compton) and Damian Lewis (Homeland). Giamatti plays Chuck Rhoades, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, known for his ruthlessness and disgust for wealthy criminals. Lewis’ character, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, as well as his wife Lara (Malin Akerman) come from a lower-class upbringing and made their way up the social ladder. Axe is an extremely ambitious and adamant hedge fund king, whose partners died in 9/11 attacks leaving him the only one responsible for the company. Axe, in the public eye, seems to be charitable but in fact is a criminal seeking revenge on his, yet unrevealed, enemies for their crimes of the past.

Interestingly, Chuck’s wife, Wendy (Maggie Siff) works at Axe’s hedge fund as an in house performance coach. When the opportunity presents itself for Chuck to build a case against Bobby’s company it also creates a conflict of interest in his personal life.

The shows builds just enough tension to keep us focused and wanting more, all the characters present great on-screen energy and we wonder what’s going to happen next.
