Tuesday Tunes | Songs You Should Have on Your Radar

We’ve included a little bit of everything in this week’s edition of Tuesday Tunes. Starting with a Jack White track that he’s been storing in his vault of unreleased music for quite some time, and ending with a magical Gaslamp Killer record that is sure to make you feel invincible.

  1. Jack White – “Love is the Truth”

On September 9, Jack White performed a beautiful acoustic medley of  “You’ve Got Her in Your Pocket” and “Love is the Truth” on The Tonight Show. He starred as a musical guest to promote the release of his new album, Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016, which came out on the same day as his performance. Fun fact: This song was actually revealed to the public once in 2006 in a Coca-Cola commercial and is only now being released as an official, remastered record. It’s short, but very sweet.

  2. Ricky Eat Acid – “hey”

Teen Suicide‘s Sam Ray – AKA as Ricky Eat Acid – has been working on a myriad of musical projects since the band’s unfortunate breakup in 2013. Ricky Eat Acid is a project he’s been working on since 2011 but that didn’t really take off until he began releasing music as a soloist. It’s hard to pin an exact genre to his work. It’s a combination of experimental dance elements that can just as much inspire feelings of nostalgia as well as euphoria. “hey” is definitely a change in direction when compared to his previous releases, but it holds true to his credibility as a versatile artist. It’s sounds like ODESZA, Caribou, and xxyyxx decided to make a love-child and this glistering track was the outcome.

  3.  Pional, Empress Of – “The Way That You Like”

Terrible Records has really been on a roll with what they’ve been putting out lately (See Above). TR’s Empress Of – who is known for her dream-like vocals and 80s inspired instrumentals – teamed up with Spanish producer Pional to create this booming track. It’s also one of the first of Pional’s productions in which he opted to incorporate his vocals into, and we are all for it. According to an interview Pional did with Pigeons and Planes, the song is supposed to be about “a toxic relationship where you can’t say no, you always pick up and you always reply but it’s not a two way street” The instrumental – mainly comprised of distorted synths looped to the thyrthm of steady drumbeats –  goes hand in hand with the somewhat somber tone set by the lyrics.

  4.  Devendra Banhart– “Saturday Night”

We’ve been in love with Banhart’s delicate, raspy, folk-like voice since the release of his hit album, “Oh Me Oh My”, in 2002. The king of indie freak folk never ceases to amaze us with his next-level song-writing skills (” Why mourn the loss when life is letting/Go of us but not forgetting/Everything that made you stronger/Won’t be around much longer”). His ability to be so effortlessly poetic is something that not many singer-songwriters are able to accomplish, even throughout the span of their career.

    5. The Gaslamp Killer – “Residual Tingles”

If you’re in the mood to feel like you’re navigating your way through an epic movie scene, this tune is definitely for you. Fans rejoiced when GK announced that he would be releasing a brand-new album – Instrumentalepathy – on September 16th, especially after taking a break from releasing new material for about 4 years. This particular record, hot off Instrumentalepathy, was released as a single to prep and prime listeners for what he had in store. The Killer nailed the space-age sound by layering a slow crescendo of brassy strings and mystical vocalsa groovy set of percussion elements.
