Theatre Review: Company XIV’s ‘Snow White’

A burlesque Snow White

Everyone knows the story of Snow White. The fairest of them all. Skin as white as snow. Lips as red as blood. And the seven dwarves too. But imagine the story of Snow White but with a more adult theme. And by adult, imagine it with thongs, heels, and all in burlesque. Company XIV is renowned for their sexy and modern interpretations of classic stories and this performance is just as good as the rest.

Snow White at the Minetta Lane Theatre is everything you could want in a sexy show. Amazing dancing, incredible singing, and the sexiest performers you will ever see. Snow White tells the story of Snow White and her struggle fighting off the evil, jealous queen, and how she enlists the help of 7 helpful dwarves, but just in a sexier way.

Company XIV’s Snow White does a fantastic job at telling the classic Snow White story but with modern twists. We all know about how the queen of the land tried to kill Snow White in a few different ways. But the way Company XIV used that storyline and adapted it with a deadly corset, a deadly comb, and then a deadly apple, is proof of how creative and mindful they are to the integrity of the story. One might think that the burlesque aspect would detract from the overall story. However, what is so great about Company XIV is that the burlesque isn’t over the top and actually rather tasteful. The storyline comes through extremely well.

And the amount of acting prowess that all the performers had in this show is incredible. Laura Careless as The Queen did a superb job. The emotion and intensity that she gave in her performance could be felt by the entire audience. And Hilly Bodin playing Snow White did an excellent job at portraying the innocence and frailty that is pertinent to playing a proper Snow White.
Overall, Company XIV’s version of Snow White is definitely a hit. The talent of the entire cast, be it singing or dancing, is something that cannot be denied. This performance is so good that it will definitely have you talking about it after the show is over.
