Theater Review: ‘Paddington Gets in a Jam’

‘Paddington Gets in a Jam,’ created and directed by Jonathan Rockefeller,  just opened Off-Broadway at the DR2 Theater, playing through March 8, 2020.

‘Paddington Gets in a Jam’ is a cheerful, whimsical show that just opened Off-Broadway at the DR2 Theater in Union Square. Created and directed by Jonathan Rockefeller, the show charmingly demonstrates how much chaos can occur when a well-meaning but clueless bear attempts to do a person’s tasks. The puppetry is masterful, and the audience never sees the puppeteers onstage. That in tandem with the gorgeous interactive set makes for an authentic live theater experience.

Doug Kmiotek’s script, which draws from multiple Paddington books, begins with Paddington going next-door to borrow a cup of sugar from his panicked neighbor, Mr. Curry, who is running around in preparation for his Great Aunt Matilda’s arrival from overseas. Paddington volunteers to help Mr. Curry complete his To-Do list before the arrival, but in no time at all he manages to turn the entire house upside-down. From flooding the bathroom, to breaking the vacuum, to ruining a cake, Paddington’s well-meaning but ridiculous antics are a constant source of entertainment for the audience.

Although this 60 minute, action-packed show is aimed at kids 4-9 years old, I can say with certainty that it’s fun for the entire family, no matter the age. The laughs and giggles filling the theater made for a feel-good experience from start to finish.

If you want to catch more of Paddington, a new Paddington TV Series is all set to launch on Nickelodeon in 2020.
