The NBC’s The Wiz Live! will be released on DVD on Dec. 22.
Audiences were treated to the the live, televised production of The Wiz on Dec. 3 and they will be able to re-watch it with the new DVD. The DVD also includes The Making of The Wiz, a behind the scenes look at producing the television event.
Starring Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Common, Ne-Yo, David Alan Grier, Stephanie Mills, Elijah Kelley and introducing Shanice Williams as ‘Dorothy’ the production racked in great viewings with 11.5 million viewers. Excluding sports, it was the best night of the week for NBC in 11 years.
With a Tony Award Winning crew and the help of Cirque de Soleil dancers the cast and crew brought to life the story of The Wiz. Originally a Broadway musical The Wiz is an urban take on the original Wizard of Oz.
Along with the DVD release a previously unreleased Diana Ross album is now available. Diana Ross Sings Song from the Wiz is a rare recording from 1978 of Ross singing every role’s songs in The Wiz. Ross played Dorothy in 1978 movie adaption of the show along side Michael Jackson, Ted Ross, Nipsey Russell and Lena Horne. The album is available now at all digital retailers.
