Hulu and Disney+ continue to expand their Korean drama offerings, with recent originals like Blood Free and Uncle Samshik. Their latest thriller-mystery, The Tyrant, delves into the world of accomplices and a mysterious, deadly South Korean creation.
Directed by Park Hoojung (known for New World and The Witch) and featuring a powerful cast including Cha Seungwon (Kim Sang), Kim Seonho (Director Choe), Kim Kangwoo (Paul), and Jo Yoonsu (Chae Jagyoun), The Tyrant is a compact four-episode binge-watch.
To build excitement, Hulu hosted a preview screening of the show, which we enjoyed. The series opens with a gripping introduction to the titular “Tyrant,” a powerful and dangerous creation developed by South Korean scientists aiming to liberate their nation from foreign control.
While I anticipated Kim Seonho’s departure from rom-coms, I was pleasantly surprised by Jo Yoonsu’s standout performance. Hulu and Disney+ have consistently showcased strong female characters in their K-dramas, and The Tyrant is no exception.
The show delivers thrills and gore, though some moments feel excessive. The first two episodes aim for a global audience by introducing English-speaking antagonists. Despite some pacing issues, The Tyrant is worth watching for its compelling storyline.
